The How to fight foam-- insulation problem Do you have urea-formaldehyde insulation in your home? If you do, the re-sale value of your home may not be what you think it is. The only home sold in Simcoe county recently which was insulated with UFFI, sold for ap- proximately one-half of its normal value. The Federal Government has benefitted financially from the installation of this in- sulation, and now they stand to gain from the improper tax assessments on the homes in- volved. Rabeco Insulation Limited, the company that installed the foam, was 37 per cent owned by the government and operated through government grants. This company is no longer in existence. Your tax. assessment is made on the normal market value of your home and property. If through the insulation, you are only able to realistically get 50 per cent of the value, then you have been improperly assessed. By appealing your assessment, you may be able to get up to 75 per cent of your tax money back. The government has passed legislation to limit this amount to thirty-five per cent. John Patchell, a Midland businessman is trying to organize all home owners who have had this foam insulation blown into their homes for the purpose of influencing the government to make proper restitution to the home owners. This will not be a new group, but will be affiliated with a Barrie group. This organization has had c commitment from a lawyer to handle the legal work for costs only. The amount of local support received will affect the amount of time it takes to have the UFFI removed from your home. If you are a home owner who has been af- fected by urea-formaldehyde foam insulation, contact John Patchell at Cumming-Nicholson Shoes, or call 526-5861.
