by John O'Hara I live at 274 Church et Fr ee 4 ron Penetanguishene. My wife Josie and I have two sons, Danny and Johnny, as well as a married daughter Cathy Marchand and a son-in- law Bill. I am self-employed as President of Huronia Insulation Specialists Lid. Three years ago I was appointed as a director of the Penetanguishene Chamber of Commerce and the following year was elected President, a post I have held the past by RAY BAKER Eleven years of public service have come and gone. This has included area and local planning boards, chairman of police, development and housing committee and chairman, public works. We have a good team on council, skilled in all aspects of municipal Katimavik program working wonders "Katimavik" is an Inuit word which means meeting place, and 11 young participants have come to a meeting place in Midland. Katimavik is a nine- month, government- sponsored program established for Canadian youth bet- ween the ages of 17 to 21. They come from all parts in Canada (1) to learn an alternative lifestyle; (2) to develop personally; (3) to do volunteer community work and (4) to see and learn about the country. Within these four philosophies, Katimavik has seven learning objectives. These ob- jectives are under the two years. Previous to that, I served two years on the Penetanguishene Minor Hockey executive and I have just recently been appointed by Town Council to the Midland- Penetanguishene Joint Manpower Assessment and Planning Com- mittee. Job creation is of utmost importance to us all and it will take co- operation of all levels of government to solve this area-wide problem. Locally, our council should do everything in its power to attract new industry. This situation has recently reached catastrophic _ proport- ions but has been a major concern for many years. We do not need band-aid remedies, but long term solutions. When the situation has eased we must keep pressing for more job opportunities for our young people. We have a great deal to offer potential industry and should actively search them out. Some of our assets are: a large willing work force, excellent land prices, JohnO 'Hara eyes council abundant leisuretime activities, picturesque setting and a com- munity second to none. We should work with a positive attitude to achieve an end result that would allow our children to remain in the area to work and raise their families. In regard to work experience, I spent 10 years on the Burrough of North York Fire Department and also have experience in road construction. I was employed by Beamish Construction as a road maintenance crew foreman for two years and by the Ministry of Natural Resources as Super- visor of road _ con- struction in Awenda Provincial Park. I also worked for the Federal Department of Public Works as an on- site Inspector for two years. The knowlege gained over the years should give me a good understanding of projects undertaken by the town. Our north end sewer and road reconstruction plan is our major im- Ray Baker's goal: another term on Penetang council government. I want to continue as a member of that team. Over the years, by sound fiSpciall management, we have upgraded our housing stock, planned _ sub- divisions, developed short and long term road and sewage facilities. We have excellent plans ap- proved for the development of the northend of town. We have spent over $100,000 in the westend. THE FUTURE supervision of four committees. This is the report of the com- mittees in charge of Environment and Appropriate Technology and Work Skills. Environment and Appropriate Technology The purpose of this learning objective is to become aware of the environment and people's effects on it and to study and follow a lifestyle appropriate to the world we live in. Katimavik participants learn to lead a "con- server' instead of a "consumer" lifestyle. What is council doing about it? Council recently appointed myself and eouncillor, Dion to a new commission. Work Skills The work skills ob- bers of commerce, labour council, in- dustrial commissions and the federal man- power branch. Our job is to present to Ottawa a demand that the federal government assist the area in view of the unemployment rate and designate it, 1.LA.P.
