I was born in Oro township, March 20, 1937, one in a family of seven children, five boys and two girls. There are two brothers who are farmers, two brothers who are doc- tors, and my two sisters are married to farmers. I am the fifth generation in Oro Township. I attended a one room school house in Oro Township, and secondary school in Barrie. Yes, I remember working for $2 per day, and that was for an 11 hour day too. Not like it is oday From 1953 to 1963 I worked for Lakeview Dairy in Barrie, as a route salesman, five days a week; and drove the ice cream truck on Wednesdays and the bulk pick-up truck at farms on Sundays, for seven days a week. In 1958 I tried to join the OPP, thinking that a job with the province would be good security for the future. I wrote three exams and failed every one of them. It was always the spelling that failed me, and that was my best subject. About six months later I was checking in one day and Mr. Kinze, my employer, asked me if I had tried to get into the OPP. It was a surprise to me that he knew, but I said, "yes". Mr. Kinze said, "Allan you are not a man to work for someone else all your life. You havea lot of ability and should have your own business." Being a route salesman was a great experience and education for me. Dealing with all sectors of society was a very great experience.
