Our cameras go to Dance ang school expands "A by Carol Dimock The Dianel School of Dance is expanding. Diane Elias, who has been teaching dance in the Penetanguishene and Perkinsfield since 1979, has decided to extend her courses to include outlying areas. She has _ offered classes in ballet and jazz dancing for children in Lafontaine and Victoria Harbour this year, but so far, enrollment has not been sufficient to start classes. "Ballet is not just for people who want a career in dance," Elias states. "'It's good for developing poise, balance, and _ self- discipline. It's. very helpful to someone in skating or gymnastics." Courses are available to every age group, from three years old, and to both sexes. It is very good for children to exercise as their muscles and _ bones develop, according to Elias. Children with special problems, such as clubfeet, will benefit particularly from ballet exercises. "T've seen seven or eight year-olds too tight to touch their toes," she says. Elias herself had polio at the age of eight. and says that her ballet training helped her recover. She began dancing at the age of three, and began study at 5 with 'Gwenyth Lloyd, founder of the Canadian School of Ballet and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She eontinued studying ballet with Arnold Spohr, director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Eva von Gencsey, director of Les Ballets Jazz in Mon- treal. She attended the Banff School of Fine Arts, and studied in Vancouver with Myra McBurnie. Elias performed with Rainbow Stage and the Review Theatre in Montreal. She was assistant ballet mistress at the Canadian School of Ballet in Lethbridge, and began teaching in this area in 1979, with Georgian College. Since 1979 she has given private classes. "The classes are a combination of Ballet and Jazz. Ballet is the foundation."says Elias, "The music we dance to is not strictly classical-- it's everything from rock music to Joan Baez."' It's unfortunate, she says, that people have the idea that men in tights are effeminate.
