Salmon is fast becoming a luxury item due to the rising cost, but consider the possible price per pound should some angler snag a special salmon on what has been dubbed the "Million Dollar Day." The Toronto Star's Great Salmon Hunt could have some lucky fishérman walking away financially secure for the next 20 years. The Hunt began on Aug. 14 and will continue until Sept. 26 at noon. But, on Sept. 18, a salmon carrying a special tag could bring home more than the proverbial bacon: a million dollars is riding on the back of this coho. It will be released prior to the derby and if a salmon chaser isn't lucky enough to catch it on a day other than the 18th or another lucky day designated by the Toronto Star (if there should be poor weather conditions) it will bring home $10,000 as a consolation award. However, it must be caught between the Million Dollar Day and the end of the Salmon Hunt on Sept. 26. The angler who ends up on top of the heap during the hunt run will drive away in a new Dodge Ramcharger followed by a 20-foot Wilker fishing boat powered by a 200- horsepower Mercury Outboard sitting on a Cal Trailer. And don't worry about tackle: Mitchell is supplying a boatful and Lowrance will be chipping in a graph and digital depth alarm to help you find the big one. Of course there will be Walker Electric Downriggers to save anglers' arms for playing in the big salmon, The whole package is worth about $50,000. Not a bad payday for some lucky angler. If you aren't lucky or skillful enough to end up No. 1 but managed to enter a few fish over five pounds, there is always the luck of the draw. Anyone who enters a coho or chinook salmon, rainbow, brown or lake trout over five pounds will have their name entered in a draw to be held at derby's end. The prize: what else but another Dodge Ramcharger tailed by a boat, motor and trailer. Even if you're not No. 1 there are- many other prizes making the $15 entry fee a good investment. All totalled there will be more than $120,000 in prizes and cash to be awar- ded. The winner will have to earn his spot, though. As John Power, outdoor writer for the Toronto Star, put it: "Don't worry about being alone on Lake Ontario, we expect about 15,000 entries this year." Each week the heaviest fish entered in the derby will receive a Lund Boat, Mercury Outboard and Caltrailer, creating six mini- derbies. Anyone interested in taking the chance of becoming a millionaire or picking up a new boat, motor and vehicle can pick up an entry in Toronto at Canadian Tire Stores, Collegiate Sportsworld, Sears, selected sporting goods stores and at the weigh-in stations. Net proceeds from the 1982 Great Salmon Hunt will go to the Ringwood Salmon Hat- chery Expansion Program which will hopefully give us many years of good salmon fishing irtthe future.
