sin ame Sneed es ean ra ANI Pai tee se were good| | Greening Donald, clearly not the crowd favorite, came back from a 2- 0 deficit in the championship game against the Techform Eagles to win the Annual Huronia Slow Pitch Tournament and the $300 first prize last weekend. Greening Donald took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a Larry Langley blast over the left field fence which drove home Paul Winstanley-Hayes, who had singled in front of him. Greening came back with one in the top of. the second when coach Brian Duquette singled home Glenis Mullings, who was on base ahead of him. Greening could have had a few more that inning, except for some fine play by the Techform glovesmen. Third baseman Paul Winstanley-Hayes made a_ scin- tillating diving catch of a line drive off the bat of Mike Jones, and with the bases loaded and two out, left fielder Bill Ladouceur came scrambling in to make a sliding shoestring catch to take away a hit from Scott Winstanley-Hayes. Techform went quietly in the bottom of the second and Greening scored three in the next to take the lead. They never relinquished. Peter Jorgensen led off with a double, stole third and scored on a single by Bill Gidley. Gidley was then forced at second by John Jones, who later moved to third on a single by his brother, first baseman Mike Jones. Mike Jones then stole second and Glenis Mullings cashed them both in with a two run single. Greening then extended their lead by three when Scott Winstanley- Hayes cracked a two-run triple to score Keith Kennedy and Brian Duquette. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Peter Jorgensen. Techform came back with a pair on a Larry Langley double which drove in one, with Langley scoring on shortstop Bill Gidley's relay which squirted out of his hand and sailed over the backstop. Langley was awarded two bases and scored on the error. Greening scored three more in the fifth to take a 10-4 lead and salted it away with four in the sixth. Bill Gidley atoned for his-earlier error when he strode to the plate in the sixth with Peter Jorgensen on second and promptly parked one out of the ball park. Winning pitcher was Ed Hubbard, who pitched all four of his club's victories. The loser was Russ Cousineau, who went three and one on the day. The ending was slightly marred when several Goman Boats players, who had been watching the game from the stands, came out on the field and a_ scuffle with some Greening players~--ensued. The uprising was quickly quelled and the Greening squad was awarded the trophy. FEN Gryphon Theatre Of Barrie PAGE 30 August 13-21 Eves. 8:30 - $8. and $10. Mat. Wed. & Thur. $6.00 In the consolation championship Simcoematic edged out the Dollartown Saints 18-17 in a seesaw thriller. Both sides had plenty to cheer about as each team had their offense in high gear. Jackie Dusome connected for a two-run homer for Simcoematic but was answered by the same from Dollartown's Darrell Bates. Hitting stars abounded for both teams as Dave Diver went four for four with four runs scored for Simcoematic and Perry "Red"' LePage went four for four with three runs scored for the Saints. Honorable mention goes to Bill Murray of the Saints, who was three for four with three runs scored. Dollartown broke out on top after one complete, leading 3-2, but were trailing after four, 11-7. They came back with five in the top of the fifth to take a 12-11 lead which was shortlived. Simcoematie scored four in the bottom of the fifth and added three in the sixth to go into the seventh leading, 18-12. Tense moments' developed, however, as the Saints never gave up. They had five runs in and the tying run at second in the person of Randy LePage with two out when Keith Sager popped up to second base to end the game. Winning pitcher was. Al Deschamps, loser was Joe Crosato. The whole day saw quite a fair bit of ball played at McGuire Park, with the tournament starting at 8 in the morning and 23. games later finishing at 12:30 a:m. Earlier results had seen the Leitz Brigade, Ogilvie Mills, I.U.E. Sluggers and Wilkin's Auto all eliminated after two straight losses; Fred Hook's, Bay Mills, The Donut Villa and last year's winner Bank of Montreal from Barrie all won their first-round games to move into the top flight but were then eliminated in their next game. The final four in the top flight were Goman Boats, Techform Eagles, The Warriors and Greening Donald. Goman Boats were knocked out by the Techform squad, while Greening rolled over the Warriors to set up the finale. In the consolation flight the final four were the Steelbrite Steelers, Simcoematic Canteen, Dollartown Saints and last year's consolation winner, Lacroix Contracting. Simcoematic hammered Steelbrite to move into the finals and Dollartown took a big lead into the last inning and held on to defeat Lacroix Contracting to snatch their spot in the final. In Closing, a tip of the hat goes to David Durtnall, Al Deschamps, Mike MacCallum and the multitudes of others whose behind-the-scenes work madé the tournament 'the success that it was. Jackson, of the host club, went on to win the tournament for the fourth straight year. Pappel, of Toronto's Don Valley club, finished second, four strokes back of Jackson. Greening Donald swept three more league games this past week in Huronia Slow Pitch League action. Ed Hubbard, who just last week pitched the league's first shutout ever, came right back to turn the trick again; Greening defeated the I.U.E. Sluggers 10-0 to give Hubbard back to back shutouts. Scott Winstanley- Hayes cracked a three- run homer to back Hubbard in that one. Their next effort was a make-up game of a rain- out and it saw the Greening squad rack up seven home runs en route to a 23-6 win over Bay Mills. Glenis Mullings and Ed Desjardine each pounded out two four- baggers apiece with the other three going to Peter Jorgensen, Bill Gidley and Ray Forget. Hubbard once again got the win. Their last game turned out to be a 25-5 rout of the Steelbrite Steelers. Hubbard went the distance again, getting support from Scott Winstanley-Hayes who was five for six with a three run homer.
