Unfortunately, none of the Midland rinks came up with any titles at the event, won by a Tottenham contingent with a Stayner rink runners-up. This coming Monday more out-of-towners will put the local lads and ladies to the test in the Alzina Belfry Trophy mixed trebles competition. After all, they still had at least one game to play in their final Penetang-Midland Ball Hockey League championship series against the S. Charlebois Haulage Diggers; they led the best-of-five series two games to zip after a 3-2 win Sunday and a 4-3 decision Monday at Penetanguishene Arena, but, of course, things still weren't settled and there was a game last night. But it was the manner in which Ron's--this year's regular season champions again and long-time guardians of the league's cham- pionship standard--have taken a grip on this year's final that had most observers giving them the wink yesterday morning. fh ey, were threatened, of course, in the first game of the finals, but they managed to pull it out of the hat once again -- adding to their con- fidence and air of im- pregnability. Everybody knows they can be beaten, but doing it is another matter entirely. They were down 2-0 throughout most of Sunday's opener after David Robillard and Brian St.Amant slipped a couple past Ron's goaltender Mike Duquette to give the determined Diggers something to work with. But back came the defending champions, narrowing the gap with less than six minutes to go when Dan O'Hara made it 2-1 to shake up the now-defensive Charlebois squad. A couple of minutes later the Diggers' nightmare became reality when Mike Orser pushed one in to tie it, regulation time ran out and Ron's were poised for the kill. Less than a minute into overtime, Terry King twisted the blade and the Diggers were down. Monday night it was Ron's who attacked first, opening up a two- goal gap, and they never backed down. Gary Bellisle paced _ the winners with a pair and singles came from Lyle Buttineau and King. David Robillard responded with a pair and Dan St.Amant had one for the Diggers. Ron's coach Ken Vaillancourt said yesterday morning that Sarnia is still a big '"'if", that the Diggers have been '"'pretty com- petitive' and that he'd rsure like to get to Sarnia to try to improve on last year's fifth-place finish because he figures Ron's have a much-improved product this year. By ten o'clock last night all the question may have been an- swered for Vaillancourt and Ron's ball hockey club. If not, everybody knows, they'll just ask the questions again, ina much louder voice, on Sunday. Fa Arena. Gulf Oilers. Diggers and David his club. the Oilers.
