That movie not only had tremendous appeal to moviegoers, it also garnered much critical acclaim, including the Best Picture Academy Award. Stallone produced a sequel three years later which also became a smash hit. Yet Stallone's other screen roles haven't fared nearly as well. He made F.LS.T., Paradise Alley, Nighthawks and Victory. It seems like the public won't take to him in anything besides the Rocky pictures. As if to prove this, Stallone has just released Rocky III. Sure enough, this third in- Rocky Ill stallment in the life of the fictitious boxer Rocky Balboa, "the Italian Stallion'"' has become one of this season's biggest hits. Rocky III opens with the final minute of the gruelling fight from Rocky II in which Ricky defeated his opponent Apollo Creed and gained the World Championship title. The movie then moves into a five-minute montage sequence showing some of Rocky's succeeding fights over the next couple of years. 3 Rocky seems to have everything in life he could ask for during the first portion of Rocky III. He is happily married, he has a son, a beautiful home, and the prestige and honour of being a world champion. Of course if nothing went wrong, there would be no drama to this installment of the story. So all kinds of things begin to go wrong for Rocky, and his success turns those who can't get enough of fists and Stallone sour. Too many details should not be revealed for fear of spoiling an en- tertaining story. It is certainly to Stallone's credit that he is able to follow up previous Rocky movies with a third one, by following a basic formula which somehow doesn't get stale. He was been able to breathe new life into his Rocky screen stories. Stallone manages to hold our interst in this latest installment of rocky Balboa's life, and to keep us concerned as to the fate of this screen character he has created. I commented last week on how it was sort of a family reunion to see the crew' members of the Starship Enterprise reunited in The Wrath Of Khan. Seeing the characters in RockylII is like meeting old acquaintances again. Talia Shire is back as Rocky's devoted fect 1 wife; Burgess Meredith is back as Rocky's gruff but dedicated old coach; Burt Young is back as the boozing constantly com- plaining brother-in-law; and Carl Weathers returns for the third time in the role of Rocky's former opponent Apollo Creed. Rocky III introduces a new character in the form of a deadly new opponent named Clubber Lang who makes Apollo Creed look like a pussycat by comparison. Besides the cast members, Rocky III has the same excitement, humour and warmth which made the first two Rockys tremendous box-office hits in their respective years. Rocky III is another winner. Stallone claims that he has en- visioned Rocky as a trilogy, a group of three movies. He says there will be no more Rocky movies. Only time will tell. Travel news, WLEWS sikaieuuietestsesiuseucraaeatsedeanimaalllt " as) With airfares skyrocketing trans- Atlantic travel may very well come back down to the ocean. It maybe that a refined hovercraft "cheaper than air craft but swifter than shipping"' will eventually ferry passengers and cargo across the Atlantic. Predictions are that a "wingship" (a cross between a hovercraft and an air- plane) will cross the Atlantic at speeds of about 727 KM an hour, making the trip in some nine hours. Cargoes of over 1,000 tons are expected to be accommodated. "A passenger leaving New York in the later afternoon, for example, could spend a leisurely overnight journey arriving in Europe the next morning. Described as neither Hovercraft, air- plane, hydrofoil or ship, the wingship is envisioned as embodying the fundamental principles of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics to create a new type of craft. It will be launched by means of down- thrust fans creating an air cushion until a cruising speed of several hundred kilometres an hour is reached. The "'wings" will then be implemented to skim the surface of the water at heights between 3.5 and 14 metres. The height is the critical factor that would give the craft considerably more fuel efficiency than a jet. The wingship will also be an im- provement over traditional sea vessels as it will fly over the top of high seas or other inadvertent weather conditions such as a fog bank just as a plane does. The best of both worlds. Free Weekend Packages Bahama Cruise Line will offer free weekend packages in New York and Montreal to passengers on three seven day cruises to the St. Lawrence, Nova Scotia and New England aboard the Veracruz. The 704 passenger liner will depart weekly from New York or Montreal on one wa sailings from June 11 through Sept. 24. All full fare passengers on the June 11, June 18 and July 2 sailings will receive free weekend extensions in the destination cities of New York or Montreal, including hotels, transfers, sightseeing and return transportation. Air Travel for Disabled Persons Air Canada has made some recent changes Y and improvements for handling travel arrangements for disabled persons. . -Boarding procedures were modified following discussions with the disabled. Passengers now remain in their own wheelchairs right up to their seat on large aircraft or to the door of smaller aircraft. This minimizes the number of transfers of the disabled from wheelchair to wheelchair. . . Air Canada Wheelchairs at airports are being replaced or modified to incorporate leg and heel straps. Leg and heels straps are also being installed on the "Washington" boarding wheelchair. . . In time, further testing will yield a new standard of wheelchair, replacing the Air Canada wheelchairs currently used at air- ports. ROXY THFATRE E. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL Fri June 25 thru Thurs.
