Thanks Reeve Rawson for ajob well done THERE SADLY CAN come in a politician's life a point where sickness or pressing emergencies of one's private or public avocations make it difficult, if not next to impossible, to continue in public office with the same dedication and vigor. Reeve Charles Rawson of Tay Township found himself at this crossroad last week ... and so 1fter almost a decade of unselfish service to his township and indeed to his county, he resigned, for personal reasons, as head of Tay council. It can be said without equivocation that "Charlie" Rawson was good for Tay. As head of council he exhibited all the characteristics of an elder statesman: he was kind, cooperative, sincere and most of all, he was honest. He was never afraid to give an undisclosed account of his life and actions. As the reeve of Tay Township, "Charlie" Rawson always carred himself uprightly. So let it be said of Reeve Charles Rawson, he served his municipality with distinction, diligence and above all with upmost fidelity. A simple solution LAST WEEK trees were vandalized at McGuire Park in Penetanguishene. During the past few weeks at least 30 cars in Midland had their tires slashed. There are almost daily accounts in North Simcoe of other property being vandalized. What's the answer to controlling this kind of wilful damage? A good place to start is for all of us to respect other people's property! A simple solution? You bet!!! ' : sl iwi | i igs : Thanks for community support Dear Editor: The Canada Employment Centre for Students would like to extend a warm thank you to the community for its support of this year's Hire-A- Student Week. Jogging for Jobs was a great success with twenty students making the ten kilometre jog from Penetanguishene to Midland--even though it was raining. Several organizations were represented in the job including the Huronia Volunteer Bureau, Centre d'activites francaises, le Camp Bivouac, and the Midland Parks and Recreation Day Camp. We give a special thanks to Mike Howell for driving the chase car. The Canada Employment Centre for Students will be open until September. If you would like to hire a student or get further information please give us a call at 526-3746. Sincerely, --Bob Ferguson, Supervisor Canada Employment Centre for Students 288 King St., Suite B Midland, Ontario LAR 3M6 SCBE's position outlined Dear Editor: Open Letter to the Parents of Simcoe County The Trustees of The Simcoe County Board of Education have been negotiating with the teachers of the elementary and secondary schools since February 1981, in an attempt to reach agreement ona Salary contract for the school year 1981-82 and 1982-83. Many of the details have been reported in the press over the past few weeks. Trustees are very anxious to reach a satisfactory agreement now, in time to complete the planning for the opening of schools in September of 1982. The Trustees feel they owe it to the parents of the County to explain what has been happening, and what may be expected in the future. Over many years, the Board has succeeded in building an unusually competent staff of teachers in our elementary and secondary schools. The Board is proud of the calibre of our teachers, and equally proud of the very good relationship which has existed between Trustees and teachers since 1969. In order to maintain this relationship, the Board has offered, in the current round of negotiations, a very good salary package which will place our teachers among the best paid in the province. Who is at fault? Dear Editor: Are we all guilty, or is it just a few. Each day as I walk along the waterfront at Balm Beach I take with me an old plastic shopping bag and pick up all the refuge that washes up on shore after the winter. This is garbage, filter ends of cigarettes, cigar lips, plastic broken cups, styro-foam everything; bits and pieces of it, bottles, bottle tops, frizbees, clear plastic bags, green plastic bags, paper wrapping off gum and candy. Don't we care any more what we are doing by polluting the beautiful waters of Georgian Bay and making our beach unsightly with our throw away garbage. Lets make an effort to take our garbage home with us. --M. Hayes Further, the Board has offered a pian which will reduce class size over the next three years, and in addition provide extra teachers to meet the needs of_special education students for whom we are developing new or expanded programs. We do not anticipate having to lay-off any teachers in the next three year period. Some of the stories appearing in the press seem to imply the Board is attempting to reduce the number of teachers or staff because of declining enrolments. This is simply not true. The Board will have a decline in school population, but it plans to at least maintain the number of staff in order to reduce class size and in order to provide more programs for special education students. This is virtually a guarantee against lay-off for some years to come. The Trustees are very acutely aware of the effects of these prolonged negotiations on staff morale. We also know how seriously affected your children can be by low morale in teachers, or, even worse, how serious can be the effect on children if we cannot conclude an agreement and the teachers decide to strike. y For this reason, the Board would like to settle our Teacher contracts as soon as we can, and intent to continue working toward this end.
