Garry Forbes * Sports editor * To the victors go the spoils BULLS LE Nip Owen Sound 23-nil at MSS by Doug Reed They did it! And it wasn't for the Gipper either that Midland Bulls Rugby Club shut out visiting Owen Sound Renegades 23-nil, last Saturday on a mud-covered and slick pitch at MSS. That match, played in memory of former Bull Bob Krista, was a classic contest. Physically both clubs were about even but it was in the line-outs, scrums, rucks and mauls that Midland really exhibited its spirit, super timing, and tremendous running ability. superb effort In a nut shell Bulls showed a superb combined effort as time and again Midland players were able to get the ball from a "'loose"' and run up field into scoring range. The host club also displayed some impressive "'allack kicking" especially off the feet of John Nix and Ken Maheu. Visitors got caught a couple of times with their scrum-caps down after a series of careless passes put them out of the money. On the other hand Midland turned out to be the enterprising club as time and again the host club literally "took it to the visitors."' Midland's slight weight dominance in scrums didn't do Bulls any harm either. The club was able to ruck the ball out of loose scrums to set up some of the prettiest plays seen in these parts in many years. So much for the overview. Getting down to the nitty-gritty, Midland opened the scoring late in the first half after Al MacDonald drove a 35-yard penalty kick straight through Owen Sound's uprights to make 3-nil, Midland. That towering kick was followed by a Peter Stubbins try. The convert was no goal. The score was 7-0 at the end of the first exhausting half. Prop John Nix opened the scoring for Midland on a nifty try in the second half. He scampered 20 yards to make it 11-0. Fly-half (stand off) Peter Cameron added to Midland's impressive scoring punch by adding a try of his own to make it 15-0. the Midland Bulls Rugby Club clobbered visiting Owen Sound Renegades on Saturday 23-nil at the MSS pitch. For-the local lads it was their first victory of the season which needless to say they savoured after losing their first five out- tings this year. --Photos by Bruce Finlayson _ Little Lake Bass Derby 19th year for this fun-filled fisher-ee! See you in the winners circle on Sunday. eight points | for Nix I caper =n eae Nix bounced back to score the two-point con- version and the game was locked up 17-0 for Midland but with more scoring to come. Full-back Ken Maheu made it 21-0 via a four- point try while Nix popped another conversion through the uprights and that's all she wrote: Midland 23-Owen Sound 0. For Nix it was his best performance this season if not in years as he notched eight points for the day. Impressive indeed. Thanks to Midland's big jumpers they were able to tip the ball time and again away from visitors during dozens of line-outs held throughout the match. Midland backs did a super job too last Saturday while the pack itself worked as a unit. The few Midland transgressions weren't costly and on the whole the club to a man played exciting rugger as they criss-crossed across the pitch always backing whoever had the ball to take the starch out of their visitors from Owen Sound. Old Bulls play Toronto XL's, Sunday afternoon in the Big Smoke for a 2:30 p.m. bash. Both Midland rugby clubs will be in action here at home Aug. 7 when they hold their famed double- header and pig roast. The younger Bulls will host Irish II while the Old Bulls will take on the XL's. Both games will be fielded at the Hugel Avenue high schoo] pitch rain or shine. Well done Bulls! Wednesday, June 23, 1982, Page 17
