June 3, a devastating blaze ripped through Bay Moorings Dining Lounge causing an unofficial $800,000 damage. Origin of that five-hour, two-alarm fire has yet to be pin-pointed by Ontario Fire Marshal's Office investigators who sifted through the ruins and warm ashes left in the wake of that Fox Street structure fire. Meanwhile, early last Saturday morning (2:02 a.m.), volunteer firefighters from the centennial town tumbled out of their warm beds to quell a roaring conflagration in the Water Street curling club. Firemen are credited with saving the building from being totally engulfed in flames after they halted the advancing fire in the lounge area but not before it caused $80,000 damage during the first hour. Fire Chief Ted Light praised his men "for knocking down the stubborn fire as quickly as they did under less than ideal circumstances." He also had words of praise for his aide-de-camp Art Desjardins and Larry Merkley, saying, "Both these firefighters knew their way around the dark, fire and smoke-filled building and were able to direct the other fellows from their vantage point."' Merkley, a well-known national curler had honed his curling skills at the local waterfront curling club.
