This year's target was $25,000 as was last year's. In 1981, the Sally Ann's 200 can- vassers raised almost $23,000. Less parking tags issued Only 261 parking tags were issued in Midland last month for parking violations. During May of 1981 a total of 655 were issued in the municipality. Body recovered A Hamilton man whose boat overturned on Orr Lake, Monday evening, was found drowned in 10 feet of water, Elmvale OPP reports. Robert McKay, 49, of Martin Road, Hamilton, was found on the lake's bottom at 9:25 p.m. about 35 minutes after the mishap occurred and about 20 minutes after the accident was reported to Elmvale OPP. Chairman of the committee, Fred Hacker, along with program coordinator Mary Gibson and publicity and promotions person Shirley Whittington attended Monday night's council meeting to pitch local law-makers on their brain-wave. By the time the three-member deputation left they were armed with a resolution of support and assured the town could give the committee financial assistance which the committee hoped to repay at the conclusion of the three-day gala Homecoming. Alderman Jack Gerow was later picked by council to sit on the committee. Other members will include Deputy-clerk Fred Flood, Ken Walker and Harry Cox. By thes time the committee becomes totally operational it is expeeted other Midlanders will be added to the group. Because of the im- portance of the venture, Hacker's presentation to council is being republished at this time: "From an economic point of view the last several months have not been easy for Midlan- ders. With lay-offs, high interest fates, high unemployment rates and business losses, one could beeome depressed. "But we have much to be proud of - much te celebrate - much to give thanks for in Midland. We have a heritage, a way of life, a com: munity spirit that sets Midland apart from man y other municipalities. "We come before you to-night to propose a focus for positive feelings about Midland - a celebration of what Midland was, is and will be. "What we are proposing is a week-end of hospitality and good old fashioned Midland | Town spirit on the first week-end in October - specifically Oct. 1-3, the week-end before Thanksgiving week-end. "We are proposing a week-end celebration of Midland that we will eall 'HOMECOMING *82.- COMING HOME TO MIDLAND". "Now let us make clear at the outset that this is not a commercial . approval, Mrs. venture. This is not a business scheme. It is a home_ oriented, family and friend oriented week-end. A week-end for all of us to show off Midland - to walk and talk proud as Midlan- ders. "The Homecoming 82 celebration which we are proposing will in- volve.-every citizen..of Midland because the cooperation and support of each and every citizen will be essential for its success. "Homecoming '82 will be an opportunity for every Midlander to show off our Town to friends and family and to do that we will en- courage every resident to Ivite family..«and friends from out of town into his or her home for the week-end. The guests may be family members who have meved away. They. may be neighbors and friends who have moved away. They may be friends and family who have visited Midland over the years. "We want everyone in Town to have a_- full house for Homecoming 82 because we want to show off our Town spirit to everyone possible. ""We've already begun the planning for a week- end of tribute and celebration for our fair Town. "Our plans _ include every organization, club and instiution in Town that wants to join in. "Subject to your Mary Gibson has agreed to be the Chairperson of our Programme Commi- ttee. As each of you know, Mary is a great booster of Midland and a tremendous organizer. "Homecoming '82 is being designed to provide a positive focus by Midlanders on their Town. But as I men- tioned earlier, we want to. share our pride with friends from outside our Town. So we will be publicizing and promoting our celebration widely. "This promotion will do two things, It will bring old friends back to Midland. It wil! ereate an image of Midland as a proud and progressive community.
