Movie review by Terry Dupuis Numerous television series down through the years have had _ their adherents, faithful fans who watch every episode. But very few, if any, of the hundreds of popular television series, have, ever at- tracted the cult following which the science fiction series '"'Star Trek"' was able to maintain. This series premiered in September 1966, and ran for a number of seasons. However, old episodes are constantly being rerun on television, much to the delight of Trekkies, the avid Star Trek fans. After the show was cancelled years back, the fans lobbied for years to try to \ have the show revived. Star Trek ||: old familiar friends -- But they had to settle for reruns, until three years ago when the next best thing happened. Star Trek was moving to the big screen. Star Trek The Motion Picture wasa 30 million dollar epic which brought back the old crew in a brand new big screen adventure. The movie had a built-in audience, and not surprisingly became a_ box-office success. Now we have Star Trek II, which is subtitled The Wrath of Khan. The budget for this sequel was reportedly only $12 million, but for my money it's at least twice as good as the first one. The first Star Trek motion picture struck me as being an elephantine bore, a lavish production full of good-looking science- fiction hardware which - sal there for 135 mantles It didn't seem to have the pacing of the hour-long television series. It took over two hours to tell a story which the television series would have done in 50 minutes. Star Trek II is shorter at around 110 minutes, and it seems to move along much faster. It has good special effects, some imaginative moments, and most im- portant suspense and action, much more than its' predecessor had. William Shatner is back again as James T. Kirk, former Captain of the U.S:S. Enterprise. He is now an Admiral. Spock is now the commander of the spacecraft, but through an emergency situation which develops Kirk ends up getting his old command Star Tre il ae a reunion of the other series regulars: everyone's favourite Vulcan, Mr. Spock, played as only Leonard Nimoy can play him; DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy; James Doohan as Scotty, the chief engineer; George Takei as Sulu; and Walter Koenig as Chekov. The Star Trek cast works so well together, and seeing them together again creates a familiar reassuring feeling. They really seem like one big family. It seems to me that no matter how talented any of these actors are, and no matter how many other roles they may play throughout their careers, they will always be fondly remembered as crew uae of the Starship Enterprise. | Magnan- -ificent swimming Lise Magnan earned three gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals to help the Midland Y Keegos Swim Club to a second-place finish at the Richmond Hill Invitational Swim i ee 4 A grand occasion On Wednesday, May 26, the Midland Chapter of the order of the Eastern Star welcomed members from many Chapters to honour Bruce Holt, Grand Representative of the State of Colorado in Ontario, (and a long time resident of Midland, and now of Barrie.)
