Gals win 2- Chisholm and Leslie Milward scored once apiece to boost the Jill Midland Secondary School girls' soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Orillia District Collegiate Vocational Institute Tuesday at Midland Secondary School. The victory was the second of the season for the unbeaten Midland squad. They tied their other two outings, one a scoreless draw against Orillia's Park Street Collegiate a squad they'll be meeting next Tuesday at MSS for what will probably shape up to be a showdown for the zone title. The gals played in Elmvale against Elmvale District High School yesterday, and if they won it, will finish the regular schedule in a tie with Park for the top spot. Yesterday's game (no result was available at press timey shouldn't have been a_ difficult assignment for the MSS team: last time they met Elmvale, Midland walked away with a convincing 3-1 victory. If Midland repeated the feat yesterday, one more win Tuesday will advance them to the Zone 2 3 playoffs in Barrie next Thursday. Midland goaltender Marlene Amos_ was tested only three times in Tuesday's contest, and the only one that got by her came in the dying moments of the game. Chisholm scored the game opener early in the second half after dribbling through the goal mouth and pun- ching in a curving shot from a sharp angle. Milward's goal came midway through the second half and was the result of a long, high shot from about 35 yards which was grabbed by the Orillia goaltender right on the goalline; unfortunately for the visitors, the goaltender was unbalanced when she caught the ball and she fell backward into the net. 'It was instructive' The Midland Secondary School Junior and Midget rugby teams capped off what might best be termed "educational"' seasons Tuesday al Brock Secondary School in Cannington. The Juniors were hammered 24-0 by Brock in their only matchup of the Nor- thern Regional playoffs and the Midgets got by Rosseau Lake Secon- dary School of Muskoka 8-4 before dropping a 7-0 decision to Brock. Randy Greenlaw and Dennis Robitaille had the tries for the Midgets in their opening game. Despite their lacklustre seasons, MSS midland town Gatti coach John Nix says the players from both clubs - most of whom were new to the game -- learned a lot about the sport from their few encounters. "They learned that they have to be very dedicated and very consistent," said Nix. "They also learned that they have to be very file But, said Nix, the players did enjoy themselves and, more important, developed a basic working familiarity with the game that will serve as a foundation for next year and right through to post-secondary play. We're under construction... but we still offer More CHOICE More VARIETY Morefor YOU Two members of the school's Junior team -- Lloyd Pilon and Bob Devine -- have been campaigning with the Midland Bulls, the local Mid-Ontario Rugby Union entry, and will continue the schedule with the Bulls. Three other MSS students -- Paul War- nke, Gus Butcher and Allan Johnstone -- are also members of the Bulls lineup, but were senior age this vear, and there weren't enough seniors to form a team at the school. Next year, Nix Says, MSS will probably field a senior squad to join the Juniors and Midget. Fillin a ballot for the *600.
