Port MeNicoll by Eileen Hocken Port McNicoll's volunteer firefighters approached Council at their last meeting with a request for more money. As Reeve John Moreau said, "They acted like gentlemen and we saw no reason to not treat them like gentlemen. They said they wouldn't let the village down if they didn't get the raise." Council agreed to their request and the firefighters will be getting an extra $800 for the year. This isn't too much considering the riase will be split bet- ween the 16 firemen. The firefighters usually approach Council every year for a little more moeny to help them keep up with inflation. "They gave us a_ professional presentation and their demands weren't too high," said the reeve. He also said Council had no qualms about increasing the firefighters' stipend. "They work on a point system and at the end of the year they divide up the funds. They only make a about $300 a year. '"'We have one of the best volunteer fire departments in the county."' Port MeNicoll will be pleased to know that the portion of their property taxes that cover the administration of the village will not be going up. According to our village clerk, Alex Hancox, there will be a slight increase in the education levy. The increase will be about 2.2 mills. What that means in dollars and cents is not known at this point. Mr. Hancox said that town expenditures are up a little over last year due to increased labour and material costs, but that this is offset by a slightly higher tax base. No large capital works programs have been planned for this year. The last large project was the con- struction of our Com- munity Centre, and judging from the way it has been used since it went up, this definitely was a- worthwhile project. Mr. Hancox said the budget figures should be complete by the end of the month. A number of Port MeNicoll Public School students have been involved in a gym- nastics program over the past three months while others _ par- ticipated in the Music Festival last week. The school decided to give the parents an opportunity to see and hear the students who have worked so hard in these two areas. On Monday, May 17 at 7 p.m., the school held a program of music and gymnastics. A reminder that Port MeNicoll Public School will be holding its second annual Giant Garage Sale on May 29.
