International Year of Disabled Persons have abated somewhat, and efforts continue to carry oul the many worthwhile projects begun in this special year, I would like to take this opportunity {o introduce your community to a volunteer organization which has existed for q decade. The Handicapped Aid Program has, since 1972, been making it possible for handicapped people to become involved in one of the most interesting facets of radio listening. HAP, as it's known for short, began in the USA as a project of a large shortwave listeners' club. A Canadian branch was begun in 1973, followed by branches in Britain, India, Germany, New Zealand and Australia. One might not readily consider radio listening as a hobby, but when the listening involves tuning in {o broadcasts from all over the world via short- wave radio the activity can soon become a hobby in every sense of the word. International broad- casling On shortwave is done by more than 150 countries of the world, and the majority of these stations have programs in English as well as numerous other languages. Many people these days are turning to short- wave radio listening - which isn't the same as Amateur or Ham Radio by the way - as an in- leresting and exciting alternative to TV reruns and local AM radio fare. The services provided by the Canadian Han- dicapped Aid Program and its. volunteers are completely free of charge and include all the necessary information, advice, and guidance to get blind and visually impaired, and even severely physically handicapped people started in an ac- livity that allows one to travel to the furthest corner of the world without leaving home. No need for expensive air fares with shortwave radio. The latest generation of shortwave radio receivers, which are equipped with push-button tuning and digital frequency display, make it a simple matter for even a quadraplegic to operate with a pencil held in the mouth and tune in hun- dreds of foreign broadcasts. - If the Canadian Handicapped Aid Program can be of assistance to you or to someone you know might benefit from an interesting pastime, further information (also available on cassette tape for Open house was a special event Dear Editor: We would like to thank all our friends and supporters who participated in our "'Open House"' on Tuesday April 22.
