Port McNicoll by Eileen Hocken Nine Port MeNicoll students from Grades 5 to 8 took part in a Public Speaking com- petition at the school last week. Chairman of the competition was Mr. Parkhill. Mrs. Wilcox and Mr. Farquhar were the judges. Competitors were Sarah Eelles, Sheena Eelles, Tim Copeland, Bruce Busch, Analea Jackson, Lisa Thompson, Patty Twigg, Scott Garrett, and David Ardern. Congratulations to the winner Bruce Busch and the runner-up, Patty Twigg. These two will be participating in the Oral Com- munication Festival which will take place at Regent Public School on Tuesday, April 27. The public is invited to attend the com- petition. Port McNicoll students have also been getting ready for the Red Cross spell-a-thon. Scott Garrett is Port's Intermediate representative while Tara Walker will be our Junior representative in the Spelling Bee. The finalists will be spelling off with other pupils from different public schools during Education Week, April 26-30. The spelling competition will be on Thursday, April 29 at Regent Public School beginning at 7:30 p.m. During Dental Health Week the students of the public schools were invited to enter an Ontario Dental Association poster contest. The theme was "Smile Canada"' and the kids obtained poster rules and specifications from their classroom teachers. Jennifer Spak of Port MeNicoll Public School was one of the youngsters who won an award in the poster contest. Congratulations, Jennifer! The Elementary School Junior Basketball Tournament took place at Midland Secondary School last Wednesday. The Port MeNicoll girls and the Parkview School boys came out winners. A total of 120 players from Grades 4,5, and 6 were entered in the event. The Port MeNicoll girls were the victors in their three team matches, earning them a place in the final, where they clobbered Regent School with a score of 24-12. The Port girls defeated Corpus Christie 27-8 and Burkevale 14-12 in their pool. Burkevale won over Corpus Christie 34-6 in the next game. Regent won the other pool with a 16-6 vic- tory over Huron Park and a 27-26 point score over Parkview. Huron beat Parkview 14-13 in the other game of that pool. The Parkview boys won their title with a narrow 8-7 decision over Port McNicoll. We are very proud of the way the Port MeNicoll girls and boys played their games. They put a whole lot of enthusiasm and fun into their basketball! The Easter Egg Scavanger Hunt held at the Community Centre on April 10 was a great success. 100 children attended the event. The Teen Dance held on Friday, April 16th at the Community Centre was very suc- cessful. About 80 youngsters showed up. Thanks are extended to the chaperones, Judy Dubbin, Mrs. Cleleand, Carol Quesnelle, Donna Jackson and Willie Bottineau. The Recreation Board is still on the look-out for more chaperones to add to their list. If your teens frequent the dances, your name should be on. that list of chaperones. We would ask that you call 534-7904 and give your community the support it deserves. The Adult Recreation Dance which took place last Saturday night at the Community Centre was certainly a night filled with fun. The attendance wasn't quite what the Recreation Board had hoped for, Drop-in Centre? Former Midland councillor Nancy Keefe chaired Monday night's inaugural committee meeting of a group cf Midland resource people who are looking into the need for a drop-in centre in Midland. The idea, initially spawned by Midland Salvation Army's Lt. Ray Braddock, has now reached the point where a steering committee has been formed and a questionnaire is to be prepared to be circulated to pupils at two schools in the town. Based on the study's findings, the committee will proceed from. there. "Tf the kids in say Grades 7 and 8 aren't in- steering committee takes step at a time terested then it seems to me there may not be a need to operate such a centre," Braddock said yesterday. If one is eventually established it will be located in the former Alliance Church building at First and Elizabeth streets in Midland. The Salvation Army has been renting the structure since the former church's congregation moved to new quarters on Yonge Street West. The committee is comprised of John Potts, Nancy Keefe, Lt. Braddock, Dr. Richard Thomas, Mary Gibson, Dan Downey, Dana Summers, Joe Blake, Joan Schirmuly, Verna Brookes, Jim Blackwell and Doug Reed. Arbitration date to be set this week? It should be known later this week where and when an arbitration meeting will take place between the Town of Midland and of- ficials representing Local 1581 of the Ontario Professional Firefighters Association. The union forced the hearing because of the laying off by the town last month of two town firefighters. The layoffs are part of the town's efforts to bring this year's budget in line with last year's. Meanwhile the Ontario Police Commission has been sent a letter asking the OPC to allow thé town to lay off one civilian radio operator.
