Mix well with interested observers, then top it off with a big piece of Birthday Cake. This describes the scene at Huronia Mall last Thursday evening as several groups of boys and leaders joined together to celebrate not only Baden-Powell Week, but the 75th anniversary of Scouting. Scouting . . . what's the magic that holds the interest of these young boys in today's computerized society? What makes a young boy leave a warm bed, hot food, television video games, automatic dishwasher, indoor plumbing, and a mother who picks up after him to spend a week or weekend camping out Recipe for a happy birthday SCOUTING AROUND /\ in the cold, eating possibly raw, smoke- flavoured food that he had to cook himself, washing his own dishes, using an outdoor biffy, being responsible for keeping his side of the tent or cabin clean and neat, with his only entertainment being songs and stories around a blazing campfire. . Is it magic? Or just plain responsibility that we all must face in order to survive in our ever-changing world. Whatever it is, Scouting may not be the whole answer but to the thousands of young boys involved with Scouting it sure is a good solid start. Thanks now to Rita Hoadley for the above article, and thanks to the Management of Huronia Mall, the agreeable shopkeepers, and the leaders and boys who made it all a success. And thanks to Robin Nutbrown, now in Belleville, former author of this column. We wish you well. P.S.: | Scouters, remember the Dinner- Dance March 6, and the Kub Kar Rally on March 7.
