a eee eee by Terry Dupuis Considering that horror movies have been running rampant on theatre screens for several years now, particularly those of the cheap exploitational ilk, the time certainly seems right for asendup. This is what a new comedy-horror movie called Saturday The 14th attempts to do, but none too successfully. The movie's title sounded promising, and might lead the viewer to expect a rich burlesque of sleazy thrillers like Friday The 13th. What we get instead is a lamely con- cocted haunted house comedy, so juvenile that it made me long for the comparative sophistication of "The Munsters" and "'The Addams Family". , Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss star in Saturday The 14thas a couple who inherit a house from a late departed uncle. They are Ha-ha horror: time is right but not this movie Saturday the 14th \ overjoyed at the reading of the will when their inheritance is announced, but they begin to wonder whether it is good or bad luck when their lawyer begins to warn them about a Social used to appear with the Chicago based Second City troupe. He is a truly eccentric comedian with a penchant for the offbeat. I remember seeing him years ago in a rarely seen low- budget superhero spoof called Fearless Frank. Darden was memorable in the role of twin mad scientists. In recent years this actor has been largely wasted in very brief roles, but the one virtue of Saturday The 14th is that he finally has another role which he can sink his teeth into. He plays a wacky Professor Van Helsing who arrives on the scene to exorcise the monsters from Richard Benjamin's new home. Severn Darden's shenanigans help to rescue Saturday The 14th from the blandness of the rest of the cast. He even helps to erase the memory of Jeffrey Tambor, who is em- barrassingly bad in the role of a vampire. As for the rest of the film, it's truly a shame that it wasn't put together with a little more wit and style. A marvellous opportunity to spoof the murder and mayhem cheapy creepies has been lost here. Far better was the comedy sendup called Student Bodies, which came out last summer. iy curse on the house and keels over dead. workers Regardless of this omen, the couple move 2 2 into the forbidding mansion with their nine- hit the ice year-old son and teenage daughter.
