Thinking Day celebrations included a Guides play by Christine Brush As you should all know by now, Monday Feb. 22, was Thinking Day and celebrations were held on Monday at St. Paul's United Church for the Brownies of Midland and Tuesday at Mons. Castex School for the Midland Guides and Pathfinders. Among the festivites on Tuesday night was a play put on by the 5th Midland Guides about . the origins of Guiding. A guest speaker, Mrs. Malcolm, spoke to the girls about her native Scotland; she ac- companied her talk with many objects from Scotland. Also present to help achieve a Scottish air, was the drum and bagpipe section of the Midland Legion Band. The Guides themselves were asked to bring foods from all around the world to share with each other as part of the Thinking Day Party. Such things as Chinese Egg Rolls, peanut soup (from Ghana), pineapple, coconut, and cheeses from Holland were among some of the foods brought in by the girls. Chris Wrigley representing MacDonalds was present to show us some of their com- mercials from around the World. Such countries as Japan, Australia, Holland and Switzerland were shown in these films; all of which goes to show that "It's a small world after all!" As I wrote about the Promise Law and Motto for Guides in Canada as compared to Finland and India, I thought that I would use the same countries and look at the Brownie Promise, Law and Motto. Next week we will look at another three countries. Canada Promise I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God, the Queen, and my country: To help other people every ' day, especially those at home. Law A Brownie is cheerful and obedient, A Brownie thinks of other people, before herself. Motto Lend a hand. India Promise I promise to do my best to do my duty to God and my country, to keep the Law of the Bulbul Flock and to doa good turn every day. (In India a Brownie is known by a different name - a Bulbul) Law The Bulbul gives in to her elders, The Bulbul is clean and courteous. Motto Do your best Finland Promise I promise to do my best to love God and my country, and to help other people every day, especially those at home. Law A Brownie speaks the truth and is obedient, is useful and a joy to others. Motto I will do my best. Home to the shore Clothing store Four retired mariners, from left, Pat O'Hara, Art Brownlee, Mel Buckland, and Charles Ward, all of Midland, received gifts from Capt. Lou McKeown, right, Wednesday in the Masonic Temple in Sunnyside. O'Hara, born in Wyebridge, Brownlee, and Ward are all former chief engineers. O'Hara was an employee of N.M. Paterson and Sons for 45 years. Brownlee, a former employee of Upper Lakes Shipping, worked 23 years straight service and five years relief service. Ward, also a former employee of Upper Lakes Shipping, spent 41 years on the Great Lakes. Capt. Mel Buckland was with Canada Steamship Lines for 41 years. Contact, the area information centre, will be opening a_ secon- dhand clothing store in Penetanguishene in response to the results of a needs survey un- dertaken last month. Contact administrator Irene Quesnelle says 67 per cent of those townspeople polled in the survey were in favour of having a thrift to open S: hi op in Penetanguishene. There are secondhand clothing stores in Port MecNicoll, Victoria Harbour, and_ two depots in Midland. Quesnelle_ says, "Since there are none presently located in Penetanguishene we're taking a positive look at it for later in the spring."
