Cowan's revenge Carl Cowan of the Penetanguishene Kings holds off a Huntsville Huskies defender during their Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey League matchup Sunday at Penetanguishene Arena. The Kings won the game 13-3, capping off a successful weekend for the team and for league-leading scorer Cowan, who notched nine points in the two games. Toughloss for A's The Midland Athletics came up just short and took a 5-4 home-ice loss to the Port Elgin Sunocos in OHA Major Intermediate A Hockey League play Friday at Midland Arena. The loss kept the A's locked in last place in the seven-team loop, two points back of the Barrie Flyers. The Flyers have two games in hand. The A's, who hadn't seen action for two weeks, started off slowly in Friday's matchup. The Sunocos pummelled Midland goaltender Craig Watson with 15 shots in the opening frame while Port Elgin goalie Dave Rosner faced only seven good attempts. But Watson held up, allowing one goal late in the period only 14 seconds after Terry Spiker had given the home club the lead. The duel was more balanced'in the second period, and Midland again took the lead with a goal from Doug McMann at the 6:03 mark. But once again, the Sunocos bounced right back with a goal five seconds later, and pulled ahead _ with another with less than a minute remaining in the period. The. 2 Visitors threatened to pull away with another goal only 24 seconds into the final frame, but Wayne Dixon put Midland back into the game at 5:41. Port Elgin came up with their final effort just past the midway mark of the period and managed to limit Midland's comeback effort to only one goal, that from Joe Butson with more than three minutes to go. Watson faced 42 shots on the evening while his teammates managed 33 at Rosner. Each team collected . only five minors, and " none of the game's nine scoring plays came on + power plays. January 20, 1982 Knapton stars... on defense Ken Knapton of the Midland Athletics was selected Most Valuable Player among a shortened roster of OHA Major Intermediate A Hockey League All-Stars at Saturday's all- star event in Georgetown. Knapton, a winger, was forced to play defense in Saturday's matchup against the defending champion Georgetown Raiders after winter storms prevented nine of the 22 all-stars -- including three other Midland players -- from getting to Georgetown. Despite his having to play in an unfamiliar position, Knapton played a starring role in the game, which was won by Georgetown 9-2. Georgetown goaltender Doug Dragasevich was chosen MVP for the home squad. Other Midland players selected to the. all- star team but unable to make the game were defenceman Bruce Guthrie, winger Wayne King and goaltender Craig Watson. The three A's who couldn't make it live in the Midland area. Knapton now resides in Barrie. Paul Hahn of the Midland Centennials was the only player from that club chosen. Since the all-star team was announced, Cowan has scored eight goals and seven assists in three games and boosted his points total to 107 in 29 games. Other Penetanguis- hene marksmen in Sunday's contest were King, Dave Robillard, Doug Gillespie and Brian McReynolds with two apiece, and Peter Roi and Phil Cing-Mars with one each. Chris Anderson, Brian McReynolds, Robillard and Gillespie each added one to Cowan's two-goal performance in Friday's game. The Kings outshot the Huskies 40-25 Sunday. Next outing for the Penetanguishene squad is scheduled for Friday at home against the Indians.
