eS a Te Garry Forbes | * Sports editor * Howard back for Jr. try Midland native Glen Howard will skip one of four rinks competing in Sunday's Pepsi-Cola Junior Mens' Inter- Divisional Curling Championship at the Midland Curling Club -- but he won't be doing it for his old home town. Howard -- whose father Bill manages the Midland club and whose brother Russ is one of the top mens' curlers in the country -- will lead the contingent from Niagara Falls in the qualifying tournament for the Canadian Ontario championships. The 19-year-old is attending university in Waterloo, but was asked earlier this season to skip a Niagara Falls junior rink, which went on to win their Ontario Curling Association divisional title. The four divisional champs -- representing OCA divisions 9 through 12 -- are Niagara Falls, Dixie, Brantford and' Elmvale. . The two top rinks will qualify for the Ontario Junior Championships at the Kitchener- Waterloo Granite Club on Jan. 28-31. There, 16 rinks will vie for a chance at the Canadian title, to be played in late February in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. This is Howard's final year of junior com- petition, and his father: says he may have an opportunity to join brother Russ's rink in senior play next year. C eague | US t | Sarugs Off. The absence of the Penetanguishene Kings' Carl Cowan from the Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey League All-Stars is 'just one of those things," according to the manager of the Gravenhurst Indians. Cowan, the league's leading scorer with 98 points in 27 games, was left off the All-Star roster released this week after a meeting last Monday in Bracebridge. The Georgian Bay All-Stars will meet the Mid-Ontario Junior C All-Stars in their annual encounter tomorrow night in Schomburg. The All-Star team members were selected by club representatives present at the Bracebridge meeting. Penetanguishene, Oro, Midland and Parry Sound were not represented due to weather conditions. Indians manager Bernie Bowins said in a telephone interview Wednesday that each club present had a vote. As it turned out, the Huntsville Huskies have five players on the 19-member roster, the league-leading Bracebridge Bears have four, Haliburton Huskies have three and the Indians have two. Of the teams not represented at the meeting, all have only one representative except the Parry Sound Shamrocks, who'll send a goaltender and an alternate defen- ceman. The lone Kings player chosen, defenceman Terry King, says he won't attend the All-Star game. Paul Hahn was the only Midland Cen- tennials player selected. Among others not chosen were third- leading scorer Tim Davies from Haliburton and eighth-place scorer Dave Robillard from Penetanguishene. But it was Cowan's name that was most conspicuous because of its absence. Bowins said he can't understand all the concern. "All of a sudden it's a big issue,"' he said. "These things are done confidentially and I don't see any need to discuss how players are chosen or why. It takes away from the whole idea of an all-star team." : Upon learning of Cowan's non-selection, Penetanguishene manager Peter Dubeau said it's like leaving Wayne Gretzky off of an NHL All-Star lineup. The second-place Kings will continue their pursuit of the Bears with a game in Gravenhurst tonight. Sunday, they'll be back in Penetanguishene for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against the Huntsville Huskies. m Hot hands Haughton Midland Secondary School's Glenn Haughton led the pack in Wednesday's 94-23 senior boys' basketball victory over Orillia's Twin Lakes Secondary School.
