Centennial ak 4 7 4 - . a All want for Christmas is... bag J eon teal Fanfare by Diane Greenfield The rush of Christmas is past and only a few days remain in 1981. The new year will begin a very special and spectacular celebration for the Town of Penetanguishene. It was long ago in 1615 that the shores of Penetanguishene were visited by Champlain. - From that visit the small settlement of Penetanguishene continued to grow and thrive over the intervening 367 years. Penetanguishene is the oldest community in the province, but it is only one hundred years old as a town. It is this event that we will be celebrating from Jan. 4 to July 4, 1982. A rose coloured centennial calendar has been prepared by the Centennial Committee and is being sold in the town by the students of Corpus Christi School. The calendar outlines most of the celebration events being arranged within the community. A detailed official print and program will be mailed to all taxpayers (in the tax bill) and available around town early in February but two of the early program events deserve a little special fanfare. On Jan. 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. an Official Proclamation Ceremony will be celebrated at the corners of Main Street and Robert Street. All are welcome to join us for an official proclamation, aballoon releasing event and a reception with cake and an official song. Al Tucker has written a centennial song entitled "Cent ans pour Penetanguishene". This bilingual song has been released to all schools and rumor has it classrooms and choirs have been practising already. Another special feature of the reception and ceremony will be the special birthday cake. This giant cake decorated with a garland with 100 roses has been specially designed and decorated by Susan Krantz of Penetang Home Bakery. : There will be enough for eveyone so be sure to join us for our gala opening ceremony, Jan. 4. Jan. 5 is the official sign in date for the Centennial Beard and Mustache Growing Competition, except for mustaches entrants must be clean shaven. For details call Fern Moreau, Sheridan Street, Penetanguishene. Late entries are allowed but the clean shaven rule must still apply. The official centennial ball begins the social season. This gala event features, a meal, social hour, a centennial photographer, en- tertainment, and centennial costumes. Tickets which are $20 per couple are available at the town office on Robert Street. They are selling fast so don't be disappointed by waiting too long. Plan now to attend this ver special event. Centennial costumes can be rented, call the town office for referral in- formation. 1982 is an exciting year in Penetanguishene and every citizen of the town, county and province is hereby officially invited to join us. According to -a Ministry of Housing representative, a decision from Housing Minister Claude Bennett on the future of the Tiny- Tay Peninsula Planning Board can be expected before the new year. Anne Beaumont, director of the Com- munity Planning Advisory Branch of the Ministry, confirmed that Bennett would be acting on her recom- mendations following the meeting of the Area Board which _ she chaired on Dec. 15. In predicting an early verdict, Beaumont said "It's been a long time."' Tiny and Tay townships opted out of the Area Board two years ago, and the body has not functioned meaningf- _ully since that time. Beaumont described the meeting of elected representatives to the Board on the 15th as "open, honest and frank."'
