ees ataceaacieate Reproduced below is Ecole Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School Principal Gilles Cing- Mars second newsletter of the current school year. First of all let me wish each and every one of you parent readers of this newsletter a Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and a very good New Year. Cer- tainly the year 1981 is ending on a_ very positive note at ESPSS, in several ways. We had our most successful Parent Night ever this year, with at least 200 parents par- licipating. The teaching staff has committed itself to organizing a house system (four houses) for ESPSS next year, effective the first day in September. This house system is designed to provide all students with a greater sense of identity and participation in school activities. And the ESPSS staff hosted the Grade 8 students from our feeder schools on Dec. 9 and 10. This particular program was designed to provide an opportunity for the Grade 8 students to participate in ESPSS classes for a half day at a time, with a regular timetable, and generally coupled with some of their friends from last year's Grade Eights. All the elementary schools in the area participated with the exception of Ste. Croix in Lafontaine. Unfortunately those Grade 8 students were deprived of this educational opportunity by a decision of their princiap] not to allow them to come to visit ESPSS. Otherwise it was a very successful program, all. enjoyed by Open House I am also pleased to announce that ESPSS will have an open house during the month of April, a week of which is designated as Education Week by the Ministry of Education. Further details will follow in a subsequent newsletter, but we al ESPSS will be pleased to host you and the general public on that occasion, which should feature much visitor and community par- ticipation. Co;op program The Simcoe County Board of Education has developed a co- operative education progtam for its secondary school students, which involves a co-operative approach between local industry or business (em- ployers), and_ the secondary schools. We are pleased to announce that ESPSS has placed five students in that program to date and more should become possible in the future. Essentially, the co- Operatit» education program provides an opportunity for a student to get on-the-job experience for credit purposes; so long as his/her work ex- perience is related to a credit course taken in school. When one realizes that several students are also in- volved in the Link program (towards an apprenticeship in the technical trades), and all Occupation students are involved in a two- week work experience program, it certainly demostrates- that our community's employers take an active interest in the ESPSS students as future full-time employees. This year ESPSS will host two evenings where parents and Grade 8 students will be invited to ESPSS to listen to our program presentation for next year, to receive program information in writing, to receive blank subject choice forms and registration forms, and to have an op- portunity to meet with the department heads and teachers' and discuss the program first-hand. There will be two such evenings: Mon., Jan. 11, at 7:30p.m., will be a French-speaking _ pr- esentation; Tues., Jan. 12, 7:30 p.m., will be an English-speaking pr- esentation. You may call 549-7446 (ESPSS) for more information any time. At any rate, we look forward to seeing you on_ those dates if you have youngsters graduating from Grade 8 in June. Good news Several of you were in attendance. at the ESPSS annual fall concert on Nov. 26 and were treated to a very fine musical en- tertainment by our orchestra dnd dance band. The quality of the music program cer-- tainly continues to excell at ESPSS under the direction of Mr. Richard Lamoureux. We also have some very good news to announce in this regard. Mr. Lamoureux has acquired some _ 60 marching band uniforms for free, and between his efforts and those of. the Band Parent Association we anticipate a healthy ESPSS marching band next year. Here are some more details. The uniforms for the marching band would have cost $12,000. This was beyond the fund raising capabilities of the music department and the Band Parent Association. However, the Midland Barbershoppers heard of our problem and offered Mr. Lamoureux the 60 uniforms for free. These include a white band director's jacket, and red and wite band jackets, with con- trasting white pants, for 59 bandsmen-= and women. The ESPSS music department and the Band Parent's Association, and indeed all of us, are very grateful to Mr. Bruce Labrie and the Midland Barbershoppers for their generosity.
