anes 2 < hk Volunteers training for 'Destination: Sainte-Marie'"' completed a two day, 80 kilometre, hike on Dec. 5 and 6. Next June and July, the group will travel by canoe from Quebec City to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons as a re-enactment of a flotilla that took place in 1648. The stone monument (above) marks the site of the former Huron Indian village, "St. Louis", where Fathers Jean de Brebeuf and Destination: Sainte-Marie Hikers set for big trek There is nothing like an 80 kilometre hike to mould a group of individuals into a closely-knit team. Thirteen volunteers participated in the gruelling two day hike the first weekend in December as part of a training and conditioning exercise for "Destination: Sainte-Marie' taking place next spring. "Destination" will involve a canoe trip from Quebec City to the historic site of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Midland, a distance of more than twelve hundred kilometres. It will authen- tically re-enact a flotilla which travelled from 'Kebec'"' to the Jesuit mission of Sainte-Marie in 1648. The field exercise held earlier this-month was primarily designed to evaluate the physical conditioning of the participant but it also proved a telling experience for gauging the mettle and esprit d'corps of the volunteers. With 20 pound packs slung over their backs, the participants covered 51 kilometres the first day of the hike, battling cold temperatures and ex- tremely wet trails. On the first day of the hike, the group returned to Sainte-Marie under the cover of darkness and they learned the value of working as a team, following the elusive trails in the Wye Marsh without flashlights. The next day the group rose at the crack of dawn and, before half the day was over, hiked another 29 kilometres. Eighty kilometres in two days and for each participant the outcome reinforced their sense of optimism for the /twelve hundred kilometre expedition waiting only months ahead. On June 1 next year, a total of sixteen volunteers will set out in four, 20 foot, canoes for a six-week journey into the 17th century. The 20 pound packs will be replaced by 60 pound packs. The hike through marshy trails will be replaced by 50 to 60 portages covering all kinds of terrain including a 150 foot cliff.
