by Ken St. Amant Gymnastics ( Var" With so much going on, I felt that I would use this article to distribute information about the various activities of the club. FIRST MEETS -- GIRLS Last Saturday our girls travelled to Toronto to compete in the Metro-West Region first pre-qualifying meet. This meet was very unusual in the fact that there were no judges to mark the routines. The first pre-qualifying meet for all Provincial stream gymnasts was hosted by the Xoces-Eagles School of Gym- nastics. All gymnasts who are planning to enter any future qualifying meets in our region should have entered this pre- qualifying meet in order to be eligible for the Provincial Championships. I thought this kind of meet was super! The question has been raised on numerous oc- casions, '"'why have a meet without judges?"'. On the surface this appears to be a paradox. Most regions have 2 or 3 qualifying meets for provincial championships. Our region felt that a compromise would be beneficial. These athletes need the opportunity to show their parents and peers what they have ac- complished. They deserve recognition, en- couragement and support. On the other hand, the feeling is that we should not place so much importance on the winning of a ribbon at this early stage of the season. There will be a great deal of time for these youngsters to experience '"'the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat'. (more agony than thrill, usually!) I really enjoyed this meet because, for once, I eould sit back and enjoy the performance and not worry about miscues for a change. For the first time every competitor was a winner! BOYS € On Sunday our boys' team travelled to Toronto for their first qualifying meet. Unlike the girls, this meet was a compulsory meet with judges and the like. Generally, we did very well and once again had a great experience. In this meet many of the national boys were competing. This kind of exposure will help us in the long run. Loris Ferraro, who was competing in the Argo A category, placed 6th overall. He placed third in vault with 8.0; fourth in rings with 8.1; and placed sixth in the remaining four events. In parallel bars he scored 6.9, high bar 7.7, pommel horse 5.1 and floor 6.5. Jason Held, our Tyro A competitor, did just as well. He scored 8.7 in vault and placed fourth. On the rings he placed fifth with 7.5 and on floor he placed sixth with a score of 8.15. He did not place on the parallel bar with a score of 7.1 and unfortunately was scratched from pommel horse and high bar because of the short period of time for preparation. Congratulations boys, you did extremely well! FIRST SESSION The first 10 week session of the Hurons Gym Club is quickly drawing to a close.
