Ke Huronia Calendar See Page 22 by Jeanne Webb Several of our Wyevale students were honoured at the Midland Secondary School awards night on Oct. 15. Those receiving First Class Honours were: Tim Grenier, Kevin Leonard, Angela Burgess, and Patty Eichler. All received certificates and some award plaques. Some of them lead a very active life in the athletic field as well. The Pine Ridge Women's Institute held a pot luck supper in the Orange Centre, last Thursday to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Invitations were sent to all former members. The regular meeting was held, plus a sing-a- long. One highlight of the evening was a paper prepared by Winnifred Reynolds. She told some of the history of Wyevale, and where the Institute took its name from. Some of the moose hunters have been lucky already. Tone Webb and John Ord were two of the fortunate ones. Jenny Caston at- tended the homecoming last weekend at the Eastern Pentecostal Bible College in Peterborough. It was great to renew old acquaintances. Mrs. Margaret Marcellus' enjoyed having her sister, Mrs. Helen Todd _ from Woodstock, visit her over Thanksgiving. Mrs. Margaret Marcellus has returned home, having spent six weeks oul West at Portage' La Prairie where her daughter, Jean, lives. Good weather and a trip to Regian added toa lovely holiday. The Wyevale 4-H Homemaking Club & That's SNOW A total of two centimeters of snow fell on Midland, late Sunday and well into Monday afternoon. Cars, homes, streets and in some cases shoppers were covered in snow which made its first, but very early appearance this fall. Snow fell as far south as Mississauga earlier this week as a cold snap gripped central Ontarijo. report. Our second meeting was spent learning about the bones of a chicken. The members discussed a skit. We ate Chinese style chicken. It was very tasty. The third meeting we learned how to tell our fortune using an egg, and learned the dif- ference between a stale anda fresh egg. We had a taste of Quick thal we liked and a taste of chicken broth that we didn't like. The members' had_ fun working on some challenging puzzles. We now have six members. Our new press reporter is Susanne Foster. Our fourth meeting was held at Foster's at 7 p.m. We, the girls, mixed and cooked a cheese souffle, then did a word puzzle. We discussed what to bring for our banquet. The meeting ended at 9 p.m. Second book published Stella Robb Muir, of Anten Mills, has published her second volume of poetry, A Touch of Gold. A Touch of Gold, a collection of 60 short poems, follows her first collection, Country Lanes. Copies are 0n sale at Elmvale's Gala Gift Shop. Siren but no fire Monday People living within earshot of the Elmvale Fire Department's siren who thought they heard the siren sound around 4:15 a.m. Monday were not dreaming. Fire Chief Dick Columbus said that the siren sounded on its own because of dampness in the system. No fire occurred. EAT CAPER ~t ae y EON i oe A.E. LEPAGE-RADIO SHACK PUMPKIN Saturday, Oct. 24/81, A.E. LePage Highway Mall, from 10 a.m. to closing Pick up a Pumpkin for only 50< onahnew season -- 'The Odd Couple' to be staged at MSS ~ by Mary Haskill This coming Friday, Oct. 23, is opening night for Huronia Players first presentation of the 1981-82 season, "The Odd Couple'"' by Neil Simon al Midland Secondary School. Curtain time is 8 p.m. First nighters will be served dessert and coffee in the lobby, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 23 only. Audrey Hamilton and Monika Kurrle are con- vening the event. Mambers of the Players will be on hand to welcome their audience to still another season of community theatre. "The Odd Couple" is perennially popular. It seems to have been around forever, something like Charlie's Aunt. The realization that it came to the boards as recently as 1965 comes as a surprise. As a playwright, Neil Simon is a household word in theatre. His previous works are performed over and over. Huronia Players have done "'Barefoot in the Park," '"'Come Blow Your Horn" and 'Plaza Suite." New Neil Simon plays become box office hits. Witness the recent publicity--and acclaim! -- for "'Only When I Laugh"' currently running at the Odeon. One reason for Simon's lasting appeal, apart from his consistent ability to find humour in any situation, is he hits home to the problems of these times and the way the ordinary Joe handles them. According to Eric Rothwell, who plays Oscar, the underlying theme of '"'The Odd Couple" is divorce and how mature men handle the pain of losing their children and home and learn once again to cope on their own. Oscar the slob, takes the prissy guy, Felix, into his apartment to help him adjust. Divorced himself, he knows what Felix is experiencing. Another reason for Simon's continuing success is his craftmanship, the way he puts a play together. Each line contains a cue, leads automatically to the next, making it easy to develop theme and character. Brian Cumming plays Felix, the other half of the odd couple, the compulsive housekeeper. He and Rothwell provide good contrast. It is also easy to see why a wife would leave either one of them! Rothwell has played many excellent roles with the Players in the fifteen years or so he has been a member. Cumming has been in the group a year and a half during which time he played a major role in '6 rms, riv. view"', a supporting role in "Gypsy"' and in a one-act play for Studio Night. The supporting cast is equally strong with old favorites Keith McNally and Eddie Guthrie. Mark Warrack and Frank Holm, while not so well- known on the Players' stage, have already proved their abilities in previous productions. All four of thjem can be counted on for a hilarious per- formance every time the poker gang is on stage. Lee Knight and Trudy Duckworth have the only female roles as Gwendolyn and Cecily. Lee Knight started with Huronia Players in "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and has con- linued to delight audiences ever since. Trudy Duckworth is a new Player. She is a Penetanguishene girl, graduate of PSS and a Grade 1 teacher at Port MeNicoll, Director is Janet French who brought us 'Phe Matchmaker," "The Diary of Ann Frank," and "Gypsy." "The Odd Couple"' will run two weekends. Oct. 23, 24 and 30 and 31. Joan Hanna reports Subscriber ticket sales going well. They are still available and may be oblained by phoning her at 526-5655 or Raymond Knight at 534-7162. "Remember," she_ says, "Subscribers get the best seats in the h ouse!"' Tickets for individual performances may be obtained at Huronia Office Supplies, Mac's Milk, Barber and Haskill and Gignac's Children's Wear in Penetanguishene. With the extra space al MSS it is no longer necessary to buy a ticket for a specific night. NITH STONELEIGH'S SUPER BUYS!
