WE CAN'T recall in recent memory a more illuminating example of a political hot potato...in this case the hot potato being the Tiny Township dump, There has been a whole host of (unnecessary) jargon to describe the condition of the dump site at the present time. We have been told on one hand, wells and ground water in the area of the dump are contaminated while on the other hand we have been assured that just isn't so. We have had a devil of a time sorting out what has been fact from what appears to be fiction. We have also seen the un- wanted effects of bureaucratization, the ritualism of blaming the other guy, the perversion of goals and contradictory statements that have left us back at square one. No wonder North Simcoe ratepayers have been con- fused!!! Some observations LAST FALL ratepayers in Midland elected nine people to their council. Previously the council consisted of seven members but in an effort to share the work load more equally town fathers last year in Midland decided nine should be elected and not seven. Since that election not all members of Midland council have attended all council meetings. For that matter not all Midland law-makers have attended all committee and special council meetings they were to have attended. In one case, Reeve Catherine Dion missed at least six regular council meetings and eight of 10 public safety committee meetings. That number has since grown this fall. However the reeve recently telephoned the mayor of Midland to announce she plans to step down. We think the reeve made the proper decision. Over the years Mrs. Dion has served Midland well, however, this term she never seemed to be able to get un- tracked...as a matter of fact her heart just didn't seem to be in municipal politics. So as Midland members of Midland council wrangle over who should be Mrs. Dion's replacement once her letter of resignation is finally received, we'd like to go on record as saying, Mrs. Dion did serve Midland well for most of her political career and we should never forget that. 2K KARE OK KKK KKK PENETANGUISHENE is a prized community in the province perched as it is at the gateway to. the 30,000 islands. Our community's liveliness, its vivacity and exhilaration comes in part from _ being located near the waters of Southern Georgian Bay in God's country. It comes too from the fact that often as far as the eye can see there are trees, beautiful trees that at this time of year are showing off sunny, cheerful colours. Fall in the heart of Huronia is a special season. It's a sprightly, spirited, gleeful season. We often take our seasons for granted...yet some of nature's most impressive masterpieces can be seen here in Penetanguishene and beyond, far out in North Simcoe. Not enough homage and attention is paid to our seasons...it seems we are just too busy to look up to see the leaves change from their greens to golds, flaming red and orange. Fall is a buoyant time of year and just like spring with its utopian optimism, fall has a character all of its own. ...and without fall how could we ever enjoy (endure?) winter?
