End of trestle's era marked by bronze plaque dedication takes place at Hog's Bay in Tay Twp. Not even a heavy downpour ¢éould keep at least 70 people away from Sunday afternoon's dedication of a plaque at the site ofthe former Hog's Bay Railway Trestle. ~ The dedication took place just west of a little Highway 12 parkette between Victoria Harbour and Port MecNicoll. W. Allan Fisher, president of the Simcoe County Historical Association acted as master of ceremonies. On hand for the dedication were Al McLean, MPP for Simcoe East; Tay Township Reeve Charles Rawson; Port MeNicoll Reeve John Moreau; Jay Cody, chairman of the Historical Sites Committee, (the group responsible for the construction of the monument and a Victoria Harbour resident Mr. George Latondress who recalled the construction as well as the demolition of the bridge. After the brief dedication ceremony at the sile, everyone was invited to the new Port MeNicoll Community Centre for refresh- ments and to hear Special Guest Speaker for the occasion, James Worfolk, former president of the Midland Historical Society speak on the history of the famed wooden structure. The "Hog Bay's Trestle', which was reputed to be the longest of its kind on the continent was built in 1908 by Mike McPeake of Port McNicoll from pine timbers and 65' long B.C. Fir pilings. It measured 2,141 feet long and was 50' high. "The Trestle"' as it was affectionately known was patrolled by armed guards during both World Wars and was last used by The Canadian Pacific Railway in 1971. The much travelled and photographed landmark came to an untimely end in 1978 when it was demolished after numerous at- tempts to have it preserved as an Historic Site failed. Three counts, three numbers Some confusion arose at last week's meeting of Elmvale village council on the correct number of lots that are in the area that council and subdivision developer represent- ative Gordon Fancy in September had agreed could be finished afd sold. At council's Sept. 16 meeting, village solicitor Gordon Teskey counted 38 lots. Last week town clerk- treasurer Faye Townes said that she counted 32 lots in the same area on the subdivision map. Fancy submitted a figure of a total of 34 lots. The matter was left to be decided by the developer, Cadillac Fairview. Reeve Ken Knox suggested Cadillac decide how many lots it wants in the agreed upon area, and send that figure to the town. that Fairview Driver reversing charged Bayview Avenue, of 198 Eighth Street was Sunnyside, resident the scene Sunday of the Frederick Scott, 62, has 1:26 p.m. collision. been charged with The Scott car was failing to yield following reversing from the a_ two-car cident on the weekend, town traffic ac- driveway of 198 Eighth Street.
