Port McNicoll by Eileen Hocken There have been a few changes in Port MecNicoll over' the summer months. The new Community Centre is in its final stages of completion. The outside of the building is finished and also 75 per cent.of the inside work. The rough land- scaping has been done. There is a _ good chance that the first week of October will see group activities taking place in the new Community Hall, although the official opening date is set for Nov. 14. There will be an open house beginning at 12 noon with ribbon cutting and guest speakers. There will also be a buffet dinner and a dance later that evening. A dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. will follow. The grand opening will feature a '"'Nostalgia Mini Museum." Donna Jackson, a member of the recreation board, is in charge of collecting old pictures, artifacts or anything else that might be of interest to the villagers. These items will be on display for the day and any donations would be greatly appreciated. The success of the Nostalgia Mini Museum will depend on your contributions. Everything, of course, will be returned to the owners. If you have old pictures, etc., please contact Donna at 534- 7904. Anyone passing through the village will have seen another change in the form of a new caution light on the corner of First Street and Seventh Avenue. This is the main crossing for- school children and it is hoped that the light will slow traffic and help in the protection of our children and crossing guards who must use that busy intersection. The second annual carnival day put on by the Port McNicoll Lions Club took place on Sept. 5 at Paradise Point. Attendance fell a little short of the projected figure which was set at 1,000. The Lions Club feel poor weather conditions contributed to _ the smaller crowds, although about 700 people still managed to attend the festivities. 'he day was overcast and cool, with scattered 'hawers throughout. The Lions Club made net profit of ap- proximately $2,000. Proceeds will go towards heated washroom facilities at the Port McNicoll Park. Besides building the washrooms, the Lions Club plan on a utility room to house the water equipment, hoses, etc., used to flood the skating rink during the winter months. Already this year, ina Summer Works Project, six students worked hard in over-hauling the Port skating rink. Footings were poured and boards put up and painted. Club will the con- struction of the new buildings and work will start in early fall, in time for winter use. Lions spearhead Federal funds were used for fhe project and the Lions Club, in co- operation with the Council of the village of Port McNicoll, were instrumental in providing the extra money needed for material. Port MeNicoll T-ball and baseball season came to a close on Sunday afternoon. Olympia Sports and Bingo's Pals played for the Championship. Olympia Sports were the victors and received the team trophy. Each player received a gold medallion. Bingo's Pals each received silver medallions while the players on Beachhead Amusement and Georgian Bay Real Estate teams received bronze medallions. In House Leagues, Lucky Dollar and Port Firefighters played for the Championship. Congratulations to Lucky Dollar in winning the team trophy. Each of the Lucky Dollar players received gold medallions. The silver went to Port Firefighters while Tom Heels Auto Body and Haines Taxi received bronze medallions. George Hill, chief organizer of the ball games, wishes to ex- press his thanks to all the coaches, sponsors and umpires for helping to make this another successful year. Thanks also to those sponsors who con- tributed money towards the purchase of the medallions. Coaches did a super job! In tee-ball, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Fitzgerald coached Olympia Sports; Marvin Wright, assisted by Bonnie Lalonde, was coach for Bingo's Pals; Bill Cameron, assisted by Gerald Smith, coached Beach Head Amusement; Bob Klages filled in as coach for Chris Merritt who was away most of the summer. Bob was assisted by Bonnie Lalonde and Tom Savage who helped out a few times. In House Leagues, Doug Duncan coached Lucky Dollar; Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Dobson coached Promt Firefighters; Dan Rioux was coach for Tom Heels Auto Body; Roy Hill coached Haines Taxi. Port MecNicoll Senior Citizens Club took a break during' the months of July and August, but they did manage a couple of trips out of town. Their trip to Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village in Whitby, Ont., was rather special and thoroughly enjoyed by all. In August, they took part in the district picnic held at Midhurst. The Seniors put on amateur shows, skits, songs, etc., to entertain the different groups. It was a popular, fun event. The first Euchre Party of the season will take place on Friday, Sept. 25, at the Port MecNicoll Legion. Please note that the Euchre nights are normally held on the last Thursday of the month and this will continue. This month is an exception as the Legion is required for another event. The Penny Bingos and Euchre games are starting again too, at the Legion on Wednesday afternoons. These begin at2p.m. Youdon't have to be a Senior Citizen to enjoy these outings. Registration for Brownies, Girl Guides and Pathfinders will take place at Port MeNicoll Public School tonight at 7 p.m. Registration fee is $6. Any last year Plenty of changes Brownies who come with their parents must be in full dress uniform. I should point out at this time that although there are enough leaders for the Brownie Pack this year, there are about 15 young girls on the waiting list - enough girls to warrant another Brownie Pack. Girl Guides might have to be discontinued in Port MeNicoll this year unless leaders can be found. It seems such a shame as we finally have a leader for Path- finders. Registration for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will take place at the Port McNicoll Public School on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Beaver leaders are needed this year. --<€)Yy~ OD )yy»»~ eh € » Page 8, Wednesday, September 16, 1981 PEISUR stone ATKINSON TRAVEL 339 King St, Midland, Ontario 526-3713 Drop into Our Booth for Fall Fair Specials & New Winter Brochures Come & Give our Dream Wheel a Spin & YOU COULD WIN Ae 0 HERITAGE ENERGY SYSTEMS INC. e Weare headquarters for quality-built LOG HOMES & PRE-FAB COTTAGES by "Remark" and "Homestead" TILSON RECRAFT Div. of Heradean Limited Hwy 27, Midland 526-3129 SQN) \Z4 'a Cx ™, RS OQ wk 4 4 Sa >7 SS xO<we> 1X v, a ?, John O'Hara | Gome tothe Fair...
