ma } on @) < d +7 Elmvale Sporting Goods triple winners for first The Elmvale Sporting Goods men's fastball team played and won three games last week to take over first place in the Barrie and District Intermediate Men's Fastball league. The Sports are in first place by three points over Floor and Wall but the second place team has two games in hand. Elmvale plays Floor and Wall in Barrie Tuesday night with first place at stake. On Monday night, Carl Edwards pitched a two hitter to lead the Sports to a 7-1 win over Giffen Farm Equipment. Elmvale scored one run in the second inning and broke the game wide open in the fourth inning with three runs. Ken Archer hit a two-run homer in the seventh to put the icing on the cake. Carl Edwards had a perfect game going into the bottom of the seventh but Giffen had-two hits and a walk to produce their only run. Edwards was the Elmvale Sporting Goods player of the game. In Elmvale on Wednesday night, the Sports scored three runs in the second inning and then coasted to a 8-2 win over Barrie Co-op. After Co-op had narrowed the gap to 5-2, Sport pitcher Greg Giffen hit a three-run homer over the left field fence. It was the first Sports home run hit in the home ball park this year. Giffen scattered three hits to be voted Elmvale Sporting Goods player of the game. The Sports made it an undefeated weekend when they defeated Clarkson Hotel 5-0 in Barrie Thursday night. Elmvale sent nine men to the plate in the first inning and scored four runs to take a 4-0 lead after only half an inning. Carl Edwards singled and then was forced out at second by Ken Archer to make two out. Garry Turner and Doug McMann then singled to produce one run and Paul Archer doubled to score two more runs. Marc Townes walked and Chuck Jordan singled to score the fourth run. The Sports' fifth run came in the fifth inning when Ken Archer singled and then was hit home by Paul Archer. Carl Edwards again pitched well giving up only two hits to win the player of the game award once more. The Sports must give credit to the pit- ching staff for the three victories. Greg Giffen and Carl Edwards were excellent during the week giving up only seven hits in three games. At a July 12 horse show at that farm, Kelly Barber was the English Grand Champion, riding Miss Velvet. Early last month, Barber was English Reserve Champion at a show also held at Maple Trail Farms. Elizabeth Cowdrey was English Reserve Champion at the July 12 show, riding Wrigger and she teamed up with Sue MacKenzie to take the relay and pairs championship in that competition. In the earlier com- petition, Cowdrey placed first in English Turnout and Open Jumper. MacKenzie was Western Grand Champion July 12, riding Miss Hanna Gord and won the English Grand Championship last month at Maple Trail Farms, riding Flying Duchess.
