" "ie As I See It Athletes from all over Canada gathered in Ottawa this past week to compete in an an- nual sporting event that tested the true abilities of those involved. It was the Special Olympics and taking part 'were those so-called "handicapped" athletes but they proved that label just doesn't hold true. Altogether, 16 athletes travelled to Ottawa from Midland, 14 of those from the Adult Rehabilitation Centre in Midland and the other two from Huron Park School in Midland. Participating in the swimming events were two local athletes, Leo Prisque of ARC and Bernard Moreau of Huron Park. Prisque brought home four gold medals and one silver medal while Moreau brought home one silver medal and two bronze medals. In track and field, Cindy Cruise of Huron Park claimed three gold medals and one bronze and Perry Stewart of ARC put in a good performance on the bowling alleys. The floor hockey team from ARC also at- tended the event, representing the Toronto Maple Leafs with members of the Leafs in attendance. The floor hockey team came home with the gold medal, a feat which tops off the im- pressive showing they had in winning the provincial championship. Members of the floor hockey team were Mike McKee, Rick Taylor, Steve Galbraith, Lawrence Vogt, Jerry Buttsineau, Joe Quesnells, Jim Moreau, Mel Hahn, George Jackson, Brian Dupuis, Marc Renaud and Roberto Badinetto. McKee and Taylor were also chosen to play for the Canadian Division A All-Star team that played a team from U.S.A. Jackson, Renaud and Dupuis earned such an honour as well, being chosen to play for the Division B Canadian All-Star team. These wins were by no means an accident. The athletes worked hard for their placings and they have proven in their performances that their only "handicaps" lie in the minds of New meaning for slogan, 'abel us able' other people. If we had as much determination and drive as these athletes had at the Special Olympics, and certainly in their everyday lives, we would be a lot better off. A word of praise must also go out to Dave Hamilton, Bob O'Hara and Paul McDonald of ARC and Joan Vaisius of Huron Park School who joined the athletes on their trip. These -four people have earned a lot of credit for the help they've given the athletes. After this past week's events, it's going to be impossible to say that these things cannot be done. They have been done and they will be done time and time again. The gold medals the athletes now hold are not the only gold at ARC and Huron Park, for there is also gold in their intentions and their lives. Tt bbe, Py iti th.
