no UMN TR ncch 2 Ii Don Lawrence * Sports editor * The Midland Times Local athletes reap gold harvest Local athletes from the Adult Rehabilitation Centre in Midland and Huron Park School in Midland certainly made quite a showing at the Special Olympics this past week in Ottawa. The provincial champion floor hockey squad from ARC is now the Canadian champion team, having won all their games played to bring home the gold medal. Each team represented a different National Hockey League team with Midland representing the Toronto Maple Leafs. Team members were Mike McKee, Rick Taylor, Steve Galbraith, Lawrence Vogt, Jerry Buttsineau, Joe Quesnelle, Jim Moreau, Mel Hahn, George Jackson, Brian Dupuis, Marc Renaud, and Roberto Badinetto. In the division seating round, Midland took on the squad from Edmonton, winning that game 5-4, Steve Galbraith getting a hat trick for Midland with Joe Quesnelle adding pair of goals. Big win That win put Midland in the division with Edmonton, Winnipeg and Montreal. Midland, or the Toronto Maple Leafs, had no trouble in their first game with Edmonton, defeating them 10-3. Joe Quesnelle was the top scorer for Midland in that game with four goals and other goals were scored by Steve Galbraith with three goals, Rick Taylor, Jim Moreau and Mike McKee all with singles. Midland's next game was with Winnipeg and they had a very easy time of it as they blanked the Winnipeg squad by a score of 6-0, Steve Galbraith adding another hat trick. Mike McKee also put in a good performance with two more goals as did Jerry Buttsineau with a single. The fine play by the Midland squad con- tinued into the third game, this time Midland winning easily with a 7-1 score over Montreal. Midland goal scorers in that match were George Jackson with two goals, Steve Galbraith, Mel Hahn, Jerry Buttsineau, Joe Quesnells and Mike McKee all with single markers. All-stars Mike McKee and Rick Taylor were rewarded for their fine play as they were chosen to play on the A Division Canadian All- Star team against a team from the U.S.A. The two recently attended the all-star floor hockey training camp in Toronto. The team from U.S.A. won that game by a 5-4 score. Three players of Midland's floor hockey team also made the B Division All-Star team and they were George Jackson, Marc Renaud, and Brian Dupuis. van may z = Canadian champions The Adult Rehabilitation Centre in Midland sent its provincial champion floor hockey team to Ottawa this past week for the Special Olympics and they came back as Canadian Champions. Also competing in 'the Special Olympics were athletes in swimming, track and field and bowling. Leo Prisque of ARC was the big story in swimming as he took four gold medals and one silver medal, his gold coming in 25 metre freestyle, 25 metre backstroke, 50 metre freestyle and 25 metre front crawl. The Midland ARC floor hockey team represented the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Specia®Dlympics. Those medals will place him about third place in the country in swimming. Also putting in a good performance in swimming was Bernard Moreau of Huron Park School, Moreau claiming a silver and two bronze medals. Moreau's silver medal cam in the 25 metre freestyle event with his bronze coming in 25 metre backstroke and 50 metre freestyle.
