me OCTRA ride July 24 The northern tip of Tiny Township will resound with horses' hoofbeats on the weekend of July 24, 25 and 26 as the O.C.T.R.A. 100 mile Competitive Trail Ride takes place. The beautiful wooded trails will begin and finish at Maple Valley Club near Lafontaine. Forty -miles will be ridden on each of the first two days with the final 20 miles covered on the third morning. Some riders may choose to ride only the second day 40 miles while novice riders may choose to ride only the final 20 miles. Even those who do not wish to compete but would like the ride the final 20. miles on Sunday are welcome to do so. This event is sanc- tioned and managed by the Ontario Competitive Trail Ride Association and is a timed com- petition along' the designated route marked with red, white and blue streamers through some of the best trails in Ontario. These lovely trails are through private lands, county forests and Awenda Provincial Park by special per- mission. The horses are judged by experienced veterinarians on their condition throughout the rides with awards given to top contenders. A distinctive crest has been designed for all those finishing in the alloted time. The winners will receive their prizes at a steak barbeque Sunday af- ternoon which will finalize the weekend's activities. It is hoped local riders will participate and enjoy the comraderie of the enthusiastic horse owners and riders who work hard to condition their mounts properly for the challenging event. : Anyone interested in riding 100, 40 or 20 miles with the O.C.T.R.A. members will find a friendly welcome. Charlebois Haulage and Excavating Diggers recently took top honours in regular season play of Penetang-Midland Senior Division Ball Hockey and with good reason. They have the two best goaltenders in the league, according to goaltending _ statistics for the league. Bill Puddicombe of the Diggers played 450 miftutes allowing only 18 goals against for a 2 goals against average. His counterpart, Glenn Irvine played a similar 450 minutes of hockey, having 20 goals get by him for a 2.22 goals against average. Third best goaltender was Mike Duquette of Dupuis Groceteria Leafs with a massive 850 minutes of floor time for 40 goals against or a 2.35 goals against "average. Craig Watson of Stewart's Gulf Oilers Jr. golf tourney The fourth annual Midland Centennial Junior Invitational Golf Tournament will be held at Midland Golf and Country Club starting Thursday. There are now 60 golfers entered in the tournament with organizers expecting between 80 and 100 golfers in total. Last year's tour- nament drew 74 golfers.
