a Smallmouth bass moving, but not bronzeback by Bryan Berriault Smallmouth bass are finally starting to make their move to summer quarters. As yet, old bronzeback hasn't made the big move to deep water but it is moving off shore. Shallow water shoals are stafting to produce a few acrobatic smallmouth bass. One bait neglected by many are those old black slither creatures that glide through water likea bird through air.I am referring to none other than the leech. Just the thought of them makes a few people cringe with excitement. Repulsive you say, maybe so but to old bronzeback they're a delicacy they often can't pass up. Smallmouth buffs leave no stone unturned when baiting up for smallmouth bass. It's a comedy routine watching a few anglers as they cautiously attempt to rig a line with leeches. Fingers aren't too eager to make a grab at these lively creatures. Little do these anglers know but domestic leeches (home grown) won't attach them- selves to human pinkies. Even though this is a well known fact few fishermen are willing to make the plunge into a bucket full of leeches. It's usually a series of quick thrusts as a black devil goes swimming by. You might call it a half hearted effort at catching them. Putting a hook through them is another story. Once enough nerve has been mustered up to catch one the next step is quite interesting. Somehow they have to be held tight enough to put a hook through their body. As they wriggle wildly, angles have been known to give up at this point and return to more conventional baits such as worms or minnows leaving leeches to the more seasoned veterans. If, however, the shock of having a leech wrapping around your hand is overcome, there's nothing to baiting a line. To many they'd rather use a rattle snake for bait. Not all leeches are domestic. If by chance one should lay claim to some part of your anatomy use a little salt or the lit end of a cigarette to change his mind about taking up residence on your hide. I haven't heard of anyone dying from having a leech attached but the excitement after one notices one of these little suckers on his person is enough to give some people a heart attack. Remain calm and get it off. Save it and give it to a bass fishermen. He'll be eternally grateful and maybe drop off a bass or two. When fishing leeches, use a split-shot a foot or two up the line. This gives the bait plenty of room to move around and attract hungry smallmouth. Its not uncommon to have them head for cover beneath rocks. Move the line every once in a while to make sure he hasn't taken for cover while some lunker smallmouth is looking for a feed of leeches. Don't be bashful, get out and try a few neglected baits such as leeches. One week I'll do a column on using snakes for bait, but don't hold your breath waiting for it. If by chance a guide boat is your pleasure for seeking smallmouth bass try Morley Woods in Port Severn (538-2286). Woods is noted for some fine catches of smallmouth as well as muskie later in the year. There is plenty of room to move around in his boat and I don't think he uses leeches. Good luck. Putting in an ex- ceptional game in net for Leitz was Gunther Schmidt, showing he has speed in other areas besides his racing career. John Powell was stepping in as coach for his debut performance in that area, having hurt his ankle in a game last week, thereby putting him on the mending list. The worst point of the game was when Greg Schuh was knocked down on a breakaway, shaking him up badly. It wasn't until yesterday morning that the true extent of his injuries was discovered. = Hi He fractured his wrist and will now have to have a cast on his hand for six weeks, during which time he will be out of action. The team is already shorthanded and will miss Schuh on the field. They will play Wednesday night in Barrie at the Eastview field when they will take on the team from Baxter at 7 p.m. eSunfish SAT ith IT'S FUN Dans IT'S FREE It's Swan's Sailboat Demonstration at Balm Beach, July 30th See our team demonstrate the: eMinifish eForce Five eTrac-14 (Catamaran) then youcan try themyourself.
