Outland science-fiction blockbuster by Terry Dupuis Outland is the latest science-fiction blockbuster to reach the screen. Every summer now, moviegoers seem to be presented with one high-quality and in- telligent sci-fi film, amidst all the shaddy productions and obvious cash-ins. In past years we have had Star Wars, Close Encounters, Alien and The Empire Strikes Back. This summer's entry in the science-fiction sweepstakes is Outland, and it shows evidence of attaining the success at the box-office which it's predecessors enjoyed. Outland is set in the not-too-distant future in a mining colony on one of the voleanic moons of Jupiter. Here a conglomerate company from Earth has set up one of its profitable mining lio operations. According to international law, a Federal Marshall and a small group of deputies must be present in each colony to keep law and order. Sean Connery portrays the new Marshall who arrives at the mining colony, and finds that there are some sinister and strange things going on. Every once in a while one of the mining workers goes berserk and kills himself. Connery is assured by the colony's overseer and others that the suicides are not unusual. They say its a form of moon madness which occurs from time to time. But the suicides seem to have been occuring with much more frequency in recent months and Connery investigates. What he finds out should not be revealed _in a review, but I will reveal that the outcome of the marshall's investigation is that some "hired guns"' are sent out to the colony on a space shuttle to eliminate him because of what he has learned. If this plot sounds a little like a western, this is no coincidence. Outland is in fact a clever transposing of a familiar western plot to an outer space setting. It has been called "a sort of science-fiction High Noon", and killers were coming to town by train to get him, and he ended up having to face them alone. His deputies and the townspeople, through cowardice or not wanting to get involved or personal reasons, will not help him. In Outland we are presented with a similar plot. The small western town is a a ne Movie review now a mining community in outer space. The hired guns are arriving not by train but by space shuttle. And the marshall played by Connery has to face his ad- versaries alone, like Cooper did in High Noon. This new film works amazingly well, aided to a large degree by Connery's earnest performance as the marshall and by Peter Boyle's villainous boss of the colony. The sets and art direction also aid immeasurably, as do some superb special effects. But Outland is no imitation Star Wars. There are no charming robots, ray guns or lazer swords to be found in Outland. Instead the film is a realistic and gritty depiction of what a mining colony in outer space would probably look like.
