Desroches of Penetanguishene was a pretty happy man yesterday after sinking his first ever hole-in-one at Midland Golf and Country Club. Desroches was out golfing with Ove LeMesurier of Penetanguishene when they came to the seventh hole. J. P. chose to shoot the 199 yard, par three hole with his four iron and the ball went into the cup on his tee shot. Desroches' hole-in-one is special in that it is his first but it is doubly special because that hole is the one Rothman's Cigarettes has chosen to designate as their golden putter hole. That means Desroches will receive a gold putter from Rothman's for his hole-in-one. nounced the awarding of the contract for the building of outdoor volleyball courts'to Harvey Benoit Landscaping at its Wednesday night meeting. Last Saturday, June 6 some 11 girls of the Huron's Pre-competitive section, travelled to an invitational gymnastics meet held in the Barrie Gymnastic Club. Gymnasts were entered not only according to ages but also by ability. Participants There were four age groupings and 2 ability levels. The youngest age group was the Tinies. This group was for gymnasts who were ages six, seven and eight as of, Jan. 1, 1981. Gymnasts who were ages nine and 10 as of Jan. 1, 1981, were placed in the cadet category. The next division was the Argo. This is for girls who are ages 11 and 12 as of Jan. 1, 1981. The oldest category in this meet was the Tyro divison. Gymnasts had to be ages 13 and 14 as of Jan. 1, 1981. As mentioned above, there was also a division by ability. The gage used for this was that of the amount of time practiced per week. Level I was for those gymnasts who received no more than 4 hours of gym time per week. Level II was for those gymnasts who received from five to 12 hours per week of gym practice. In Level I we sent five gymnasts. They were as follows: Tanya Moreau (Tiny); Kim Brown (Cadet); Jill Young (Argo); Corrine Kacmarscyk (Argo); and Wendy 'Puddicomb (Tyro) In the Level II category we had six gymnasts representing the Hurons. These girls were: Bernice Spencer and Chris Turner (Tiny); Norma Milligan and Arlene Merkley (Cadet) ; and Karen Green and Julie Merkley (Argo). Results _ I was extremely pleased with the girls' performances. When one considers that this was our first pre-competitive type gymnastic meet that our club has ever participated in, we did very well. Of the eleven girls who went down to compete, eight gymnasts won ribbons. In the Level I divison Tanya Moreau (Tiny) placed fourth on the beam and 5th on the vault. Kim Brown (Cadet) placed fifth in the vault. In the Level II division Bernice Spencer (Tiny) did extremely well. She placed 4th on the uneven bars, fifth on the balance beam and sixth in vaulting. Bernice placed sixth overall with a composite score of 27.77. Chris Turner (Tiny) placed sixth on the floor exercise and 4th on the balance beam. Another successful gymnast was Arlene Merkley (Cadet). Her impressive showing on the balance beam gave her first place. She also placed fifth on the floor and placed fifth overall in her division. Norma Milligan (Cadet) placed second in vault and sixth on the balance beam. Karen Green (Argo) did not leave empty handed. She managed to place sixth on the uneven bars. Julie Merkley (Argo) also won aribbon. Her score of 8.06 on the floor gave her sixth position. As one can see, the club did really well, especially when one takes into account that there were 180 girls competing from 10 different clubs. 3 Gymnasts came from places such as Etobicoke, Orangeville, Halton Hills and Owen Sound just to mention a few.
