Telecare going strong first months a success The official opening of Telecare Midland took place Sunday evening, at.St. Margaret's Church, two months ago. The opening call was placed by Father Stephen Somerville who declared the service officially open when the first call was an- swered by a Telecare worker who realized the thrill of receiving this call which highlighted the successful fulfillment of the extensive 50 hour course taken over the past several months. Twenty-eight volunteer Telecare workers participated in this first Midland com- missioning service and were presented with their cards and made the pledge of con- fidentiality. Also commissioned were numerous resource people from all walk of life who have volunteered to offer their services and knowledge as back-up for the telephone workers. The resource panel consists of people from the clergy, medical profession and law enforcement agencies. Telecare Midland has now been in operation since this official opening on March 29. An encouraging two months has kept the volunteer telephone workers busy handling 250 calls. These calls have presented workers with many and varied situations. The majority of calls have been categorized as loneliness, and not from senior citizens primarily but from many young adults. caused by alcohol and or drug abuse. Volunteers have been busy as you can see, to keep this highly used 24 hour service available to these callers. To bolster the ranks of volunteer workers a second training course is to start in mid- September and end in mid-December. Call Telecare at 526-7836 if you wish to offer your services. The original steering committee has now been re-constituted as the board of directors for Telecare Midland and has appointed Lionel Hanmer, director; Jim Manuel, vice- director; Sandy Manuel, secretary; Tom Richardson, treasurer and fund-raising chairman; Lt. Ray Bradock, resource chairman; Sue Richardson, training and accreditation; Jerry Schnarr, public relations and recruitment; Kathleen Norton, operation chairman and Ann Johnson, membership chairman. Monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. At Telecare, they believe that each caller has the strength and potential to solve his or her own problem. "We listen and 've care, but our purpose not to give solutions. "Our aims are; to listen to those in need; to offer the distressed, the lonely, the despairing immediate contact by telephone with someone who cares; to give our callers renewed courage to live and to cope with his or her personal problems; to share our belief in a God who cares about each one of us; to MSL cottage tour Over 25 recreational properties in Huronia were viewed by members of the Midland-Penetanguishene District Real Estate Board recently.
