MVC. heading volleyball court bid Midland MHuronia Volleyball Club members will be asking for support from the residents of Midland in ea McAllen retiring in July Harold McAllen of Midland will be retiring in July as Manager of Parks in Midland, en- ding his role as town employee of 33 and one quarter years. McAllen became Manager of Parks in April of 1949 and he can remember Little Lake Park being the only park in Midland at that time. Since that time, Midland has acquired eight more parks. In 1949, there was room for 90 cabins, 28 cottages and 200-300 tents in Little Lake Park. Then a bylaw was passed. limiting minimum space for a campsite which drastically reduced the number of campers in the park. Until 1977, McAllen also looked after the arena in Midland when he was relieved of that duty because of the construction of the new arena following the fire which destroyed the old arena. The town felt the new arena required a separate manager, Jim McLaren filling that job in the same year. McLaren was ap- pointed the office of Manager of Parks in addition to his duties at the arena in January of this year. McAllen stayed on until April of this year in an advisory capacity. Right now, McAllen is 1980 FIREBIRDS, Gas Savina 267, V-8, AUIOj APES. PED, 20,000 kilas. Flood, McLaren agree on launching famp specs anager of parks and arenas in Midland as tating the new launching ramp at Pete /Petterson Park "'meets specs". / There is some further word on that issue 'raised by several Midland and area residents who claimed the grading on the ramp was too steep. Fred Flood of Midland Parks consulted the engineers and builders of the ramp for us late this past week and came up with these fin- dings. There is a 15 degree drop which then becomes a 20 degree drop and these grades are acceptable, according to Flood. These grades will allow you to launch a boat off a trailer without having your car tires in the water and possibly even your exhaust. However, because of the construction of the ramp and the grades used, it looks much steeper than it really is. Flood maintains the steepness of the grade is mostly "illusion". Grading on the ramp is done according to a study by the American Civil Engineers organization and have been used on previous projects such as this one in other areas. Flood added that he has launched a boat there himself at Pete Petterson Park and he has not had any problems. f. a story appearing in this newspaper iday, we quoted Jim McLaren, manager of their attempt at foun- ding outdoor volleyball courts in Midland's Little Lake Park. They 'will be asking for donations towards the construction of four permanent metal posts and two nets on' the beach sand surface in Little Lake Park. The fund raising campaign is the culmination of over a year's work by the MVC and the Midland Board of Parks Management who will be asking for tenders for the con- struction. It is hoped the courts will be completed by the end of June. The campaign will wind up June 2 with co- ed volleyball tour- nament for club members and friends at 8:15 p.m. at Midland YMCA. No longer a growth industry Education in Ontario is no longer a growth industry. Between 1975 and 1980, a total of 183 public elementary schools closed in the province. During . the same period nine secondary schools and 80 separate ~ schools also closed. ee Harold McAllen - May 31 -Everyone is welcome to take part in a Car Rally and fun day in aid of Elmvale Minor Hockey and the Russell Hargraves Novice 'A's on Sunday, May 31 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Starting point will be Lions Gun Club on Con. 7 of Flos.
