; The Bolton National Horse Show on the weekend lived up to its reputation as one of Canada's biggest and most prestigious horse shows. This year saw entries top the 700 mark; with horses and riders from across Ontario, Quebec as well as New York, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia and as far away as Mexico and Germany. The high brightly coloured tents which housed the hundreds of horses stabled for the occassion lent a festival atmosphere to the event. Amid this international setting the Midland area was well represented by coach Don Betts and two of his crestwood riders, Toni Lembo and Toni's younger brother Tom. Tom competed in the highly competitive large Pony Division which saw ap~ Dupuis' Leafs open season with 4-1 win Defending champ - ions, Dupios Groceteria Lite. asf 3s meg Penetanguishene-Mi- dland Senior Ball Hockey League play started off their new season with a 4-1 win over Stewart's Gulf Oilers Thursday night in Penetanguishene Arena. The leafs, in their familiar blue sweaters with white trim were led by Ron Lalonde with twin goals, Martin Quigley and Allan Ladouceur adding the other markers. Scoring the long lone goal for the Oilers was Dennis Peltier. S. Charlebois Haulage and Excavating Diggers also had a big win Thursday as they trounced Cumming- Nicholson Stompers 12- 3: Hat tricks were scored for S. Charlebois by Peter Dupuis and George Mundy while Make Duval added a pair of goals. Sikngle goals were added by James Dupuis, Rick Duval, Peter Robillard and Norman Ladouceur. Scoring for Cumming Nicholson were Kirk Swales and Jeff Wright. Munday also took possession of the top spot in the scoring race with his three goals and two assists, giving him an early lead with five points. A close 1-0 game was played between Pen- Mid Merchants and M. Forget Construction Thursday as well. Dan Dickey was the only scorer for either team as he gave the Pen-Mid Merchants their sole marker. Pen-Mid Merchants outshot Forget 26 to 13 with Brad Bumstead getting the shut-out. Outdoor volleyball courts to be a reality Midland Huronia Volleyball Club will be canvassing for donations toward outdoor' volleyball courts at Little Lake Park this week. Tenders are also being advertised for by the Midland Board of Parks Maagement for the construction of the courts. This working relationship between the two groups is the culmination of over a year's hard work and the end result should be outdoor' volleyball courts to be completed by the end of June. It will include four courts with permanent steel posts with two nets being permanently in place so members of the public can play whenever they wish. The courts' surface will be beach sand which is safe and ideal * for summer activity. The fund-raising campaign started yesterday with a co-ed volleyball tournament at Midland YMCA for club members and will end June 2 with a co-ed tournament for club members and friends. The time for both those tournaments is 8.15 p.m. Funds received in the campaign will pay for nets and posts for the courts and the wooden border surrounding the courts. proximately 90 ponies entered in two flights.
