Midland rep teams performed well this season by Don Lawrence Midland Minor Hockey rep teams did very well this past season according to the report given by Bill Jones, Jr. at Midland Minor Hockey's banquet last Thursday night in Midland Centennial Arena. The Gervan and Jones Minor Atoms, under the guidance of coach Jim McLaren played to a 19 win, five tie and 19 losses record to finish fifth in a league of nine teams. - In Georgian Bay playoffs, the team came up against Stayner, winning that game to advance to a game they played against Elmvale. The game against Elmvale was a close match, Midland just missing the mark, thus eliminating them from further play. In OMHA Playdowns, the Midland squad defeated Owen Sound to represent the Georgian Bay Minor Hockey in zone playdowns. They then met Barrie ina very close seven- game series, losing in six gameg;.the series being very exciting. In tournament action, Midland Atoms won the first game but lost the second in Stayner, won the first game but lost the second and third in Orillia, won the first but lost the second in Midland Silver Stick play and lost both games in the tournament help in Penetanguishene. Monogen Also helping with the team were Manager Jim Peden, Trainer George Weatherall, Time-Keeper Kevin Hamelin. and Publicity Directors Dave and Jennifer Chalmers. Midland Bell Canada Major Atoms finished third in Georgian Bay League standings, Bourgeois wins week at hockey camp Adam Bourgeois of Bourgeois able League highlights losing out to the champion squad from Collingwood in a sudden death overtime game. In OMHA playdowns, the major atoms lost a five game series in the full five games and just missed the consolation round in a tour- nament held in Stayner. At the Golden Puck Tournament held in Port Colbourne, the team won the consolation round, defeating teams from Niagara,: Beamsville and Thorold. The height of their season was at the con- clusion with the championship going to JMidland in the International Championship: in Tonawanda, New York. i In that competition, Midland defeated : Tonawanda, Mount Brydes, Tondas and Ennismore. Their record for league play was 27 wins, seven ties and six losses. Looking after the team were Bill Logan as coach and Mike Dorion as manager. French's Dry Cleaning Minor Peewee team went through the regular season winless but had some very close games against teams consisting of 11 and 12 year old boys where Midland only allowed 11 year olds to play. In OMHA playdowns, Midland came up against a very strong team from Bolton and were eliminated from further action. In Georgian Bay Playoffs in Owen Sound, Midland defeatedCollingwood 2-0, going on to drop a 5-1 decision to Owen Sound in the next round. The team also entered tournaments in Owen Sound, Orillia and Orangeville, playing some good hockey there but just missing the mark. Coach of the team was Wayne Dewitt and he was helped by Wayne Tingle as team manager, Gary Mcllravey as team trainer, Bryan McKell and Doug Carroll as assistants at team practices. Midland Civitan Major Peewees finished _ the season in third in the Georgian Bay league with 14 wins, four losses and one tie. The team went to the quarter-finals in the All-Ontario finals defeating Collingwood in five games and losing to Sharon three games to one. They entered three tournaments, ad- vancing to the consolation championship in Huntsville, just losing out to Orillia. Their record for the season. is 23 wins, 18 losses and one tie with the title of finalists in Georgian Bay playoffs being claimed by the boys. The team was coached by Wayne Marchand and managec by Barry Bressette. Coach Bill Jones led his team,. the Indusmin Minor Bantams to a 24 win, 14 loss and two tie record for a second place finish against teams made of major and minor bantam playeers. The team won the consolation trophy in the Orangeville hockey tournament and also competed in three other tournaments in Schomberg, Huntsville and Harriston. They lost a very close series against Sharon in the OMHA quarter-finals. Assistant coach of the team is Doug Gadsby with manager Ted Watson and trainer Cyril Russell also lending a much appreciated hand. Orchard Fresh Major Bantams were finalists in Georgian Bay Championships and in a hockev tournament held in Gravenhurst. They also won the Tonawanda Cham- pionship in International play and took part in tournaments in the Silver Stick in Midland and another tournament in Lindsay. The team was coached by Jack Baugley and managed by Rick Emerson. Stoneleigh Motors Minor Midgets got off to shaky start at the beginning of the season but through the guidance of coach Ralph Ironside and manager George Adam, they proved to be a very competitive club at season's end. Midland Legion Major Midgets won the Georgian Bay hockey championships and took first place in the Regional Silver Stick finals in Midland. They also finished as consolation champ- tions in the hockey tournament held in Colbourg. The team was very capably coached by Bob Colbourne and managed by Dave Crawford.
