PLEASE CALL US Story or picture idea: 549-2012 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was avery fine and lasting tribute NOT LONG AGO three 30- year veterans with the Penetanguishene (Volunteer) Fire Department were honored for their long and dedicated service to the fire department and to their town. At the same event, the memory of the late Bob Stewart was rekindled when a presentation of a special fire chief's helmet was presented to his widow. The late fire chief was a popular firefighter, a well known and highly regarded businessman and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. That's why the presentation provided an opportunity to again stimulate some nostalgia regarding the man who served his peers in a most and very professional manner. Those firefighters behind the presentation are to be congratulated for spear- heading such a fine gesture. The late Bob Stewart played a significant role in the life and times of the community he loved...and we are not about to forget his contributions nor, it would appear, are his colleagues who were responsible for the presentation to his widow. We continue to cherish his memory. Nurses do fill an important void NURSE'S WEEK in Ontario has come and gone for another year...and invariably just like so many other special weeks we have gotten to know a bit more about these highly trained individuals. Neuere sens fr o-m Penetanguishene General Hospital, Huronia District Hospital, the Mental Health Centre and in local nursing homes, etc. share a common bond as do their colleagues around the globe. We hate to admit it but we tend to often take nurses for granted. Yet they perform highly skilled and specialized duties in our hospitals, nursing homes and in doctors' offices. The fact that there is an abnormally high shortage of nurses in the province doesn't make things any easier for those currently filling the void. Right now Ontario could use at least another 500 trained nurses (male and female), especially as the demand for more nurses for home care, extended care and nursing home care mounts. Every effort must be made to reduce this acute problem. This can only begin by paying our nurses salaries that are commensurate with their talents as skilled professionals. If we don't the flood gates are going to open wide with more and more nurses turning their backs on Ontario and Canada and opting for a career in nursing south of the border where the money and benefit packages are much better. Port wants new guidelines Dear Sir: Hon. Bette Stephenson, M.P. Minister of Education Mowat Block, 22nd Floor Toronto, Ontario Dear Dr. Stephenson: I have been instructed by council to express the opposition of the rate payers and council of Port MeNicoll to the 1981 operating budget as passed by the Simcoe County Board of Education. The combined increase for the residential properties for elementary and secondary schools in the Village of Port McNicoll has increased 13.7 percent (approximately $35,000.00) for the year 1981. Total education cost for the year 1981 $283,402.00. If the education budget keeps on increasing year after year, it will in time, bankrupt this com- munity as we have no industry and a large per- centage of our residents are on a fixed income. We must respectfully request that some con- sideration be given to either a change in Provincial Government Policy on funding for education, or special assistance to municipalities such as ours. We further request that some guidlines be established whereby the councils of Simcoe County have a greater input into the spending of property taxed on education. Yours truly Alexander J.
