'Special committee set up to deal with college The reply of the Minister of Education Bette Stephenson to Penetanguishene's letter to her expressing the town's concern about the reported closing of the Midland campus of Georgian College refers the council to a _ local committee. Dr. Stephenson says that the college's board of governors has the responsibility for managing the college. "I am sure that the board is conscious of its responsibilities and is fully prepared to defend its decisions related to all communities in its growers convene at Alliston Crossland by by Adelaide Lougheed Twenty members from Elmvale attended the Horticultural Convention at Alliston on April 22. Enthusiasm for ac- tivities sponsored by the Horticultural Society, was demonstrated when so many took part in the District Convention for the first time. Ellen Strath, our president was Repor- ting Delegate for the morning and Adelaide Lougheed, Secretary, . reported for the af- ternoon program. These reports were given at the regular April meeting of the Elmvale Horticultural Society held at the Elementary School Library. It was decided at this meeting that at least two delegates would be subsidized by the society to encourage them to attend the Ontario Horticultural Association Convention at Niagara Falls in June. A committee was appointed to aquire a Logo for our society, with an elm tree as the basis for our design. Our next activity of community interest is our spring flower show in the Community Hall on May 27. Grace Marcellus is the Convenor for this event and, at this meeting, she demon- strated how certain classes in the show could be handled. Mrs. Sharon Gilbert, Program Convenor, had Mrs. Linda Dekers for her speaker. Linda is a former instru. :° at Georgian College specializing in Organic Gardening. She gave us all much food for thought on this timely and important subject. The meeting con- cluded with a draw for seedlings of spring plants donated by John Lougheed. region, the letter says. 'The Midland campus is not being closed but there is a_ shift in programming. Geor- gian College has found it necessary to move some programs from Midland to Orillia and Barrie to make them viable. "If these programs 'were to remain at Midland, it is possible that one of the other REDUCES locations would close. The shift in programs from Midland has been in academic upgrading as well as business and commerce. _ Programs added to Midland and Penetanguishene have been skill courses such as nursing assistant and apprenticeship." Dr. Stephenson concludes by noting, a committee headed by TD John Leitch of Midland has been set up to consider all sides of operation of Georgian College's Midland campus, and that she is sure council's offer to = appear before' the 'committee would be welcomed. A copy of her letter was included in the agenda of the last council meeting. PERSONAL LOAN RATES OR 26 DAYS. APRIL 27th TO MAY 22nd, 198I.
