The Canadian Cancer Societv is trying to find the answer to cancer through research and by educating the public about thé need for early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Over $5 million will be spent this year by the Society in its public education program. This money will be spent on films, slides, pamphlets, posters, special meetings and conferences. The main objective in the program will be the prevention and early detection of cancer. Manv people, when certain symptoms appear. carry the fear of cancer around with them. unwilling to go to their doctor and perhaps have the fear confirmed. Often. a visit to a doctor could dispel that fear. and with treat- ment a simple ailment would be cured. For others. who have indeed contracted cancer, the earliest possible diagnosis is essential. The Midland District Unit of the Cancer Society implements a variety of public education programs. Pamphlets and brochures on cancer- related topics are supplied to doctors' and Yea offices and placed in information racks in many public places. Films are made available to any in- terested group, and are frequently used for health clinics and workshops. The Unit can also arrange for guest speakers to attend meetings. Juanita Rourke, our Education Chairman, has iust delivered a comprehensive kit to the district high schools.
