Back Roads, Raging Bull two worthwhile films tosee + Two very worthwhile first-run movies are due to be played in our area. One is a comedy drama featuring one of the Screen's most talented actresses. The other is a drama about a real-life boxer featuring a bleckhuster Academy Award performance by Robert DeNiro. : f he comedy drama is Back Roads, and it reunites actress Sally Field with director Martin Ritt. They were the team who scored a triumph two years ago with Norma Rae, a drama about a textile factory in the Deep South. Back Roads is more lightweight than their previous collaboration, but is equally entertaining, and it provides Ms. Field with another memorable role. Back Roads should also help to further propel the career of Fields' co-star, Tommy Lee Jones. After such flops as The Betsy and The Eyes of Laura Mars, Jones had a huge hit last year plaving opposite Sissy Spacek in The Coal Miners' Daughter. Back Roads gives the ,actor his second substantial role. and he and Sallv Field make a good co starring team Back Roads is a bittersweet comedy about two of life's losers who meet up one night in the red light district of Mobile, Alabama. Amv (Sally Field) is a prostitute who has often dreamed of escaping her environment. Elmer Pratt (Tommy Lee Jones) is a character without roots who is a sometimes boxer. But he always ends up taking money to throw the fight. He too has a notion that leaving the South and going to California may be the answer So Amy and Elmer decide@ to thumbtrip their way to California together. Most of the movie is about their trip and the series of adventures and various characters they meet up with along the way. Much of it is funny, and occasionally touching. Besides the engaging team work of Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones, there is a nice cameo.role by David Keith as a young sailor who gives them a lift. And Back Roads is well-directed by Martin Ritt, who ranks as one of Hollywood's best. Raging Bull is directed by another Martin - Martin Scorsese. Of all the professional sports. none has received more extensive screen treatment over the years than the: sport of boxing. a fictitious character. Raging Bull is the story of Jake LaMotta, a professional prize fighter who spent 13 years in the ring. From June 16, 1949 to February 14, 1951 he was the middleweight champion of the world. During his career he won more than a million dollars in purses, Raging Bull is a triumph for actor Robert DeNero, who manages to wholly subvert his own personality to totally become Jake LaMotta DeNiro got so involved in the realism of his role that he even put on 50 pounds to portray the prizefighter in his later years. DeNiro's is a totally honest and devastating per- formance. There are no false bids to the audience for sympathy. It is not surprising that DeNiro won this year's Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor.
