Reeve sets record straight hv Fileen Hocken There has been a certain amount of controversy over the proposed new' library building which Port MeNicoll plans to put up in the future. Despite news to the contrary, some of the residents. are still worried that their tax monev will go towards this project. Reeve John Moreau sends this letter in an effort to answer some of your questions: Over the years many concerned citizens have complained about not knowing what has been going on in their village bv their elected council. T will not try to list or tell vou everything at this time but I would like to tell you our position on a proposed new library and our reasons for needing one. Firstly, we should recognize the public librarv as a necessary social institution which it has now become, performing the major functions which it already carries out. These functions are: 1. Providing a com- munitv facility for continuing informal education beyond formal schooling alongside its traditional role as back up to the school library. Such facilities have become almost' as necessary as schools in a world in which rapid changes in technology, ideas and social and political conditions throughout the world soon made many of the things learned in shool obsolete. Moreover many of the thines we need to be aware of are not covered in the standard * school curriculum. For manv years now, educators have been pointing out that, in order to cope well with todav's world, education has to be a life-long persuit. Public libraries need to be recognized and adequately supported as the primary resourse thev have already became, in im- plementing that notion. 2. Providing a -com- munity facility for recreational resourses. Library resourses are as important a recreation facility as parks arenas and plaverounds and are particularly necessary to enhance citizens' "'quality of life" as people have more leisure time outside the work place and live longer after retirement from the work force. The public library's role needs to be recognized particularly at this time by the people of Port McNicoll for the reasons I have mentioned above. We have ap- proximately 500 local citizens presently using these facilities on a year round hasis. We hope to have many fund-raising events over the next year or so to raise the necessary monev to build this librarv. Your library Board is -- presently selling bricks at $2 apiece and have raised around $1,400 at this time We are meeting this Thursday, April 23, with the representatives from "Wintario" in hopes that they will see fit to assist us in funding this building. s When the money is raised the new building will be located behind the village offices, facing Fourth Avenue. It is not this council's intentions of using a pennv of 'taxpayers' monev and I think we owe a big debt of gratitude to council's representative, Mr. Leo Coneland, and the entire Library Board for taking on this major proiect and hope evervone gets behind them 100 per cent. Donations can be left at the village office, the Library or the Lucky Dolllar Store. The Library Board have intentions of canvassing the village and numerous letters have been sent to surroun- ding municipalities and several big companies. Please get behind this proiect with your financial help and support. we can do it. Let's build some community pillars. We have a good school and nice Churches. How about a Library? Yours truly John Moreau (Reeve) EGG HUNT Despite cold, windy weather, almost 100 peonle - kids, moms and dads - showed up for the Easter Egg Hunt put on by the Port MecNicoll Recreation Board on Saturday, April 18. This fun event took place at our Javeee Park. Cards with numbers on them, had been hidden different places in the park for the kids to find. The cards were handed in and prizes corresponding with the numbers were given out. Lori-Anne -- Kirdeikis won the biggest prize, a large Easter bunny. Those not lucky enough to find cards were given consolation prizes, so evervone went home with a little something. For vou kids who have been wishing for another' Scavenger Hunt. vou're in' luck. Anything which you might have can he left at the school office An appeal for donations has been sent out to the members and friends of Bonar Church. Their faithful old furnace has. turned temnermental. During the cold spell of this past winter, the furnace, according to Rev Al Farthing, "'began to collapse with symptoms of old age'. It "drank oil with wild abandon"' ($700 worth in one month) and required "major surgical repairs just to keen it barely alive" (about $300). The finance com- mittee has met and decided that their "old friend" should be given a retirement. They have determined to end their reliance upon their "old friend'"' and "ALLS growing thirst for the delicious black gold of the Middle East'"'. Thev wish to convert from oil to natural gas. Thev feel that as well as being a cleaner, more efficient fuel, gas should save them a great deal of money over the years ahead s The finance com- mittee would like to install two furnaces, one upstairs, one down- stairs. in order to heat the building to maximum _-- efficiency. The cost of this system will be $6,000. A sub-committee consisting of Mr. Jack Zummach, Mr. Robert Richardson and Mr. Dan MacRitchie, will co -ordinate the project and would be pleased to answer any questions.
