During a recent weekend the Hurons made a strong showing in both the boys and girls competitions that they participated in. Boys The boys competed at an_ invitational Gymnastics meet in Cambridge Ontario. This gvm meet was attended by clubs from Ohio State. Loris Ferraro representing the club,in the cadet category (under ten) was very im- pressive indeed. On the floor exercise his score was 8.35 which gave him third position. On the pommel horse he managed to place sixth with a score of 8.55. He placed first on the rings and in vault. His score on the rings was 8.85 while scoring 9.00n the vault. His score of 9.0 on the parallel bars gave him second in that event. On the high bar his score of 8.10 placed him in third His total score of 51.85 put him in a tie for first place with another boy from London PENETANG -- MIDLAND GYM CLUB Gymnastics Corner Ontario. Congratulations Loris; keep up the good work! Jason Held also travelled to Cambridge to take in this meet. Normally in the argo category (under 12), Jason competed in the tyro division (under 14) in order to gain valuable experience for next season. We were impressed with his results as well. He managed to place in the top six in five of the six events. His score of 7.35 on the high bar kept him from placing in the top six in that event. On the floor exercise he scored 8.15 and ended up in fifth. On the pommel horse his score of 6.65 placed him in sixth. His best score of the competition was 8.25 on the rings. This gave him fifth place for that event. On the vault he placed third with a score of 7.55. On the parallel bars his score of 7.96 placed him in sixth position. When the smoke had cleared, Jason finished in sixth place overall with a score of 45.85. Well done Jason! Girls Our girls team competed in an Invitational Metro East / Metro West gymnastics meet, hosted by the Scarborough Olympians. Although not as dramatic as the boys, the girls also made an impressive showing. For the first time, our scores were con- stantlv between 7.5 and 8.0. In the past, we would do well in some events and poorly in others. Our scores were very irregular. This constant effort in every event made our club look very strong indeed. Beatty Spencer led our team with a total score of 31.7. Her score of 8.4 on the floor exercise placed her in fifth position. On the balance beam, she placed sixth with a score of 7.85. Her other scores were: uneven bars, 7.85 and vault, 7.6. The other members of the Hurons in the tyro category (under fourteen) were: Lorrain Lacroix, Lysa Marchand, and Monica Henrikus. All of these girls showed an improved performance over their past competitions. Of special note is Lorraine's floor exercise score of 8.05, her best ever in this event. Another score worth commenting on is Lysa's score of 7.95 on the uneven bars. Her routine was well done and looked good. Monica's balance beam routine was a great im- provement over her last effort. She scored 7.5. Well done girls! Conclusion The competitors mentioned in this article will be competing locally, on May 2 at Midland Secondary School. I feel that if youl want to see some good gymnastics drop in and take in the competition. I think you'll enjoy what vou see. Gymnastics Calendar Saturday, May 2, 1981 - Penetang Lion's Club.
