Movie Review Nine to Five theultimate fantasy by Terry Dupuis The plight of some overworked unap- preciated office secretaries in the big cities is given a comical but thorough going-over in a new comedy called Nine To Five. It is not surprising that this movie is shaping up as one of the biggest hits of the new vear. It is bound to be of interest and appreciated by anyone who has ever toiled in a big office environment. A lot of the action in Nine To Five is set at the offices of Consolidated Companies. The script focuses on three of the secretaries and their boss, who is a corporate tyrant played by Dabney Coleman. The secretaries are portrayed by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton, all of whom have-to suffer some form of abuse from the boss. These three skilled performers make a most engaging trio of heroines. Fonda plays the prim and shy new girl with the company who discovers that working conditions are not very rosy in her new office environment. This role makes a marvellous change of pace for this distinguished American actress who has lately specialized in heavy dramas like Julia, Coming Home and The China Syndrome. Actually Nine To Five is also a message movie too, in its own way. The difference is that the message is delivered humourously in thé form of a comedy farce. Lily Tomlin plays the section supervisor named Violet who befriends newcomer Fonda. Tomlin is always forced to do odd jobs by the boss, as well as to constantly bring him his coffee. He constantly hangs a faint hope of promotion over her head. One day Tomlin accidentally puts rat poison in the boss's coffee, and she later mistakenly believes that she has killed him. This sets the plot into motion. Tomlin works well with Fonda. and her shrillness makes a good contrast to Fonda's more subdued secretary. Tomlin's work in Nine To Five is even better than her performances were in The Late Show and Moment By Moment. But for me the surprise performance in Nine To Five is country and western singer Dolly Parton, who makes her acting debut here. She is a constant delight throughout the movie. As Dabney Coleman's secretary Doralee Rhodes, she is constantly the object of her boss's lewd intentions. Parton never over- plays her role. She manages to turn the part of Doralee into a real individual, rather than a stereotypical dumb blonde. Parton had never acted before this movie, but she proves herself to have a natural acting talent, just as young Ricky Schroder did last year in The Champ. Nine To Five is slickly directed by Colin Higgins, who made his debut as a director two years ago with Foul Play. His handling of that hilarious Hitchcock spoof marked him as a director to watch, and in Nine To Five he confirms that promise. Higgins must be a dedicated fan of the late Master of Suspense, because he even works a Hitchcock-type sequence in Nine To Five. Higgins co-authored the screenplay of Nine To Five, and there isn't a dull moment in it. The fact that the events which occur in Nine To Five aren't likely to occur in a real-life situation is almost incidental. The movie's story of how three secretaries get revenge on their boss may be exaggerated for comic effect, but along the way it manages to score some valid points about everyday working conditions in modern-day offices. Nine To Five is really a _ secretary's ultimate fantasy. In it, the secretaries not only take over the office, they run it much better than the boss ever did. é Huronia Mall focus of local Scout - Guide Week All next week is Scout- Guide Week in Canada. As well they provided council with «= break- down of costs connected with their April trip. They would like the town to donate $1,000 to their cause of the more than $8,000 that will be needed to fund the operation. Much of the money has already been raised by the students, the Parent Group at the school and through fund-raising drives. As a result of being well received by council Monday night it is likely the town's' finance committee meeting today will approve to council the money be donated.
