i Sil ti, ci li Ni it Cents pull off comeback Midland Centennials Jr. C hockey club scored a tremendous comeback victory Sunday night in Midland Centennial Arena as they squeezed out Bracebridge Bears 7-6, Travis Bonneville scored first for Midland at the 14:42 mark of the first period with Dale Denis and Andy Zurawski receiving the assists. Denis followed that up with a second goal for Midland four minutes later. Zurawski and Bonneville getting the assists this time. With 5:49 left in the first op ery od: Bracebridge Bears got on the scoreboard to narrow Midland's lead to one goal. About a minute into the second period, Midland's Denis put the Centennials ahead by two goals with Zurawski and Don Whittaker, Midland's___ goaltender, getting credit for the assists on the play. It was at this point in the game that Bracebridge came on strong. scoring five goals in the remaining 16 minutes of the second period and taking the lead 6-3. Midland Centennials certainly had their work cut out for them in the third period and they responded to _ that demand with four goals in the third period to take the lead and the game. Ken Mugford scored first for Midland 32 seconds into the third period with Noel McEachern and John Witzke getting the assists on play. Then, it was McEachern's turn to score for Midland at the 14:24 mark of the third period with Steve Dunn and Mugford helping out on the goal. Todd Clarke gave Midland their tying goal a minute later witn Frank Dance and Ed Cooper receiving the assists. Midland and Bracebridge played head to head hockey for the next five minutes and either team could have won it but it was Midland's Denis who finally put the puck in the net with Zurawski getting the assist, that goal coming with five minutes left in the game. Don Whittaker and Steve Friesen shared the net for Midland where they faced 49 shots between them which proves just how important good goalies are to a winning club. Greg Hammond only. faced 26 shots in net for Bracebridge. Oldtimers fall short of Hindson In. an_ exhibition hockey' game Thursday in Penetanguishene Arena, Hindson Marine of Penetanguishene Industrial Hockey end 2 end out Penetanguishene Hotel Brule Oldtimers hockey team 6-5. Hindson Marine goals were scored by Ken Cowan, Bob Dion, Ron Lalonde, Paul Henry, Mike Dubeau, and Gary Buttineau. For Penetanguishene Hotel Brulé Oldtimers, John Dubeau, Fred Patterson, Larry Leroux, Dave Stainton and Ed Trudeau all scored markers. Penetanguishene Oldtimers did record a win over the weekend though as they defeated Coldwater Creaks Oldtimers in Coldwater Arena Saturday night 4- 1. Penetanguishene goals were scored by Ken Davidson, Alvin Robillard, Brian Merkley and Dave Stainton. Billy Burtch scored the only Coldwater goal. It was the first of a home and home series with Coldwater, the return game in Midland with that club being played later this season. Of seven home and home series games played so far by Penetanguishene, they have won five and gotten two ties. Those games have taken place against Midland, Orillia, Elmvale, Coldwater and Collingwood with Penetanguishene _lea- ding all those teams in points. Three games remain for Penetanguishene, Elmvale, Coldwater and Collingwood being the three teams they will play. Penetanguishene Hotel Brule" Oldtimers will be playing this Friday night in Penetanguishene Arena in an exhibition game when they will host the Kitchener Oldtimers. Game time is 8:15 p.m. and everyone is welcome. 7 Morton chances to advance good It looks like the Midland rink of Lynn Morton has a_ good chance to advance on to All-Ontario Curling Finals in Port Arthur at the end of this month, judging from their placing so far in Southern Ontario Divisional Finals in Kitchener-Waterloo. Monday, they won both games they played, 11-9 over Ingersoll in 10 ends of play and 8-4 over Gravenhurst in 10 ends. Tuesday morning, they played a rink from East York and came very close to winning that game but were forced to bow out 9-7 in the last end of play as they were tied coming home. The Morton rink played yesterday af- ternoon late and no score was available at news time for that game. At that point, though, they were tied with Sarnia and East York with two wins and one loss in round robin play. St. Catharine's was the only undefeated rink at that time. Morton's rink will play St. Catharine's rink today at 1:30 p.m. and then will play another game tonight at seven p.m. against Humber Highland. They will | play tomorrow morning at nine a.m. against Toronto Tam Heather for their last game of the competition. In case of a tie at the end of the finals, a tie breaker game will be played tomorrow af- ternoon at 1:30 p.m. Top three teams will travel to Port Arthur for the All-Ontario Finals and Morton's_ rink certainly has a good positioning to take over one of the three top places to qualify. Local team active this week Midland Centennials and Penetanguishene Kings Jr. C hockey clubs will both be playing games this week with the Kings in action tonight in Oro against the 77's. That game will start at 8:30 p.m. The Kings will also be Team trounces Collingwood following that up with a game Friday night in Bracebridge against the Bears at 8:30 p.m. They will then rest Sunday night, their next game not being until next Friday. Midland Centennials will hit the ice tomorrow night in Parry Sound when they will face off against the Shamrocks at 8:30 p.m. Midland will then be idle until next Friday night as well. Midland Athletics Intermediate A hockey club will play Sunday in Port Elgin against the Sunocos at three p.m. Barrie and Orodown Peewees Last Friday night, the Elmvale Dutcher and Corbett Insurance Pee Wees hosted Barrie Majors No. 2, where Elmvale lost the close game by a score of 3-2. Barrie opened the scoring late in the first period before Elmvale came back with two goals in the second, both by Jeff Conn unassisted. Then Barrie tied the game early in the third and scored the eventual winner with just 1:31 left in the game. Cowan Ken Cripps and Jody Hankin shared _ the goaltending duties for Elmvale. On Saturday, Elmvale travelled to Oro for a league game. Elmvale kept up with Oro for almost two and a half periods before Oro pulled away toa 7-3 win. The local boys opened the scoring in the first when Jeff Conn scored from Doug Robertson and Scott Collins' Oro came back with three goals before Mark top King Carl Cowan of Penetanguishene Kings is now tied for top point getter in the Georgian Bay Jr. C hockey league and he therefore leads his team. Cowan is now on the verge of a 50 goal season with 48 goals to which he has added 58 assists for 106 points. Wayne Dixon is in second place for team points with 78 while Doug Gillespie has 77 points. Then the roof fell in for Elmvale as Oro scored four goals in three minutes. Elmvale Pee Wees rounded out the scoring when Mark Bannerman scored his second goal from Doug Robertson and Scott Collins. Jody Hankin was in the net for Elmvale. On Sunday the Dut- cher and _ Corbett Insurance Pee Wees travelled to Collingwood and defeated the host team 10-1. Elmvale goals came from Doug Robertson with three, James Elliott and Greg Dixon with two each and singles to Robbie Phillips, Mark Ban- nerman and Martin Thiffault. Assists went to Jim Murden with three, Doug Robertson and Martin Thiffault with two and one assist each to Robbie Phillips, Andrew Moreau, Mark Bannerman and James Elliott. Ken Cripps was the Elmvale goaltender. Elmvale's next league game is Friday in Knapton Creemore and Sunday they travel to Owen Sound. coming on strong Terry Spiker and Ken Knapton of Midland Athletics Intermediate A hockey team are running a neck and neck race to see who will lead the team in total points for the season. Spiker had a good hold on the top spot for most of the season, but Knapton has been coming on strong in the past few games and now is fairly close behind Spiker for points. Spiker still has the most goals in the league at 23 while assists is Knapton's strong point at 24 for the fourth highest total assists in the league.
