Will continue to listen, act Dear Sir: As chairman of the French-Language Advisory Committee, I was hurt by Mr. Gordon Press' comment. Throughout last year meetings we were puzzled first. but pleased by the CCBU presence at our meetings. Indeed it was the only time that we both could be in the same room and exchange. To make sure exchanges could take place despite the fact that a formal delegation was never requested, we broke procedures by allowing a free and open question period at the end of the meeting. All members of the F.L.A. committee stayed for the period of questions although they could have left (again according to procedure). The CCBU has attended the committee's meetings since June 1980 and we hope that they will continue to do so. There is no doubt that I was disappointed by the no-show of francophone members of that group at the committee election on December 15th, 1980. A democratic process has value and therefore must be used to express a point of view. The "affidavit"? (declaration d'eligibilite) did not scare any francophones who showed up that night. Even two CCBU members signed it and were not (and would not have been) questioned for doing so. so. Why be afraid of signing a paper stating you are a French-speaking ratepayer if indeed you are so? That procedure is not unique to Simcoe County but is used in many counties throughout the province when a F.L.A. committee election takes place. We listened to the C.C.B,.U. many times and certainly would have done even more so if one of their members had been elected that night. We intend to continue to listen and act when possible on their worries (as we have done recently). We all feel this term of office should be one of both schools living peacefully and in "'bonne en- tente"'. Thank you, Claudette Paquin Chairman, French Language Advisory Committee. Opposes unilateral action Dear Sir: Open Letter: The Honourable Claude Bennett Minister of Housing Hearst Block Queen's Park Toronto, Ontario M7A 2K5 Dear Mr. Minister: As you are aware, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario was deeply concerned with the unilateral action of the Federal Govern- ment in terminating the Community Services Contribution Program (CSCP). In light of the Federal action, we trust that the Province will ensure that the level of funding it provided to the now defunct program will continue to be tran- sferred to Ontario's municipalities. The needs of .the municipalities have not diminished, and many, even in the absence of Federal support, would hope to move ahead on plans they have in place as long as Provincial funding is forthcoming. We, therefore, expect that the Province will, at a minimum, continue its present level of financial support. We would anticipate that there might be some desire to alter the design of the programs formerly funded under CSCP and would welcome the op- portunity of working with the Government in any endeavours along these lines. Sincerely yours, Robert Rutherford President ce: The Honourable William Davis, Premier of Ontario: ae The Honourable Harry Parrott, Minister of the Environment The Honourable Thomas Wells, Intergovernmental Affairs.
